What is censorship? Censorship is the actual process of examining books, movies, and suppressing unacceptable parts. Now that you know what censorship means, let's connect it to banned books. What exactly is a banned book? A banned book is a book that has been prohibited from being published or circulated by a government authority, usually on the grounds of religion, politics or public morality. My book Go Ask Alice, is one of the books that still remains on the banned book list. When looking into censorship and banned books, my book Go Ask Alice is one that is still fought about today. I am going to go into detail about why my book is about, why my book is banned, and what I think should happen with my book. To begin, Go Ask Alice is about a young girl who gets very much involved with sex and drugs. It’s an actual diary of a young middle class girl who is the daughter of a professor. Due to him being a professor he took a job that made their family move. Most of their family was not affected or hurt by the move except for one of them. Alice was going through a pretty tough time evolving due to the change. Alice very much feels like an outcast in school until one day she finally made a friends with a girl named Beth. This book is challenged because of blatant, explicit language using street terms for sex and talk of worms eating body parts which talking about the cause of drugs, and blasphemy. Also, they believe that the language of the American law says it stresses words the depicts or describes sexual conduct in a patently offensive manner. Many see this book as being obscene and why would parents want their kids reading a book that enhances the whole drug world. But, in the end it shows the true effects that drugs have on one person and shows the real life of drugs. She doesn’t cover anything up it’s very blunt and honest.
