If one walk along a NW 13th Avenue towards north in the downtown of Portland, Oregon, you will enter a very busy and stylish area, called Pearl District. There have expensive Chinese restaurant ‘P. F. Chang’, exquisite furniture store ‘Sur La Table’ and many other dazzling luxurious stores around this district; also, the famous organic market ‘Whole Foods Market’ is located here. The Whole Foods market is famous for its healthy foods, high prices, safe supply chain and organic products. Moreover, with the burgeoning growth of organic foods in markets, many other markets like Safeway, Trader Joe’s and Costco. They started focusing on organic foods as well, because organic foods are a big market for them. According to Whole Foods history, the CEO Mr. Mackey’s original idea was that create an interesting supermarket called “Saferway”, and the name being a spoof of Safeway in 1978. However, Mr. Mackey and Whole Foods did really well in supermarket industries within the last 30 years. After the economic recession in 2008 to 2009, Mr. Mackey had a plan to continue his business expansion in the first quarter of 2010, and he invited me to assess their financial statements and prospects. It goes without saying that Whole Foods must continue its expansion in 2010 even though they faced many difficulties during the entire economic recession.
First of all, from the microscopic analysis, the data of current ratio, quick ratio, gross profit, net income and total revenue from the financial statements of Whole Foods. The first are current ratio and quick ratio, they are a financial method to measure a corporation’s capacity to pay current liabilities which using assets that could be turned into cash in the next term and the ratio should absolutely be higher than 1.0, and 2 or higher are better; however, if the result is lower than 1.0, the corporation faces difficulties in operation.     Kroger and Whole Foods are the two giants in the grocery industry; however, their capital structure and financial measures paint vastly different pictures. The liquidity ratios, which measure short term solvency of the company, were calculated for both companies. The current ratio for Kroger was calculated to be .76 compared to a current ratio for Whole Foods of 1.60. At a glance, Whole Foods is more able to pay their short term debt obligations compared to Kroger. In the same vein, Whole Foods has a much higher quick ratio at 1.20 compared to .25 for Kroger. The capital structure of the two companies is the main reason for the distinct differences in the liquidity ratios. Kroger has financed the company’s expansions with debt; whereas, Whole Foods has financed their expansions with equity. One of the reasons why Whole Foods’ quick ratio is higher than Kroger’s quick ratio is due to inventory management. Whole Foods is an industry leader at inventory management. Whole Foods inventory consists of two-thirds perishable foods, which requires management to have outstanding inventory management to be profitable. As of September 2008, Whole Foods had 264 stores in the United States, six in Canada, and five in the United Kingdom. Whole Food’s is now the leading chain of natural food supermarkets in the United States. The company 's stores average 28,500 square feet in size and feature foods that are free from artificial preservatives, colors, flavors, and sweeteners. They also offer many organically grown products. Many locations include in-store cafes and juice bars. Whole Foods has also developed a growing line of private label products such as organic pasta, freshly roasted nut butters, oak-aged wine vinegars, and aromatic teas.     Grolsch, a company with a strong history and a highly rated product, has just been purchased by SABMiller. The company is evaluating its global strategy in light of the acquisition and determining how to position and sell its beer going forward. Grolsch has positioned itself well to compete internationally and has leveraged several tools (e.g. the MABA framework, strategic analysis) to effectively expand abroad.
