India has undergone a large process of economic reforms aiming at liberalization and attracting investments. That process, which began already in the early 1990s, continues to have an important impact on the whole economy, including the pulp and paper industry. India will also join World Trade Organisation, which will increase international competition in the Indian market. For this reason the Ministry of Industry and CPPRI (Central Pulp and Paper Research Institute) commissioned Jaakko Pöyry Consulting to carry out a survey on the global competitiveness of the Indian pulp and paper industry. We trust that this report will give a good base for planning the future operations of Indian pulp and paper industry. We thank Ministry of Commerce and Industry, CPPRI and representatives of the Indian pulp and paper industry for the valuable help and good cooperation in this survey. Customers overbuy and are left with inventories of paper, and therefore don’t buy for a while until another economic boom occurs.     The adaptation of natural fiber composites in the consumer industry has not had the same explosive growth as with the transportation or even the construction industry. The benefits of cost savings and weight reduction that can be obtained with natural fiber composites played a significant role for the proliferation into those respective industries. But in the consumer market, stemming from the rise of synthetic fibers starting in the 1940’s, glass fiber and carbon fibers have dominated the market for composites due to their superior mechanical properties. From the 1970’s onward, petroleum-based fibers replaced natural fiber so that, worldwide, the cropping of natural fibers entered into steep decline, causing economic stagnation in the producer regions. In addition to the competition with synthetic fibers, innovation in transport facilities also contributed to the decline of natural fibers, particularly the advent of commodity bulk handling facilities in long distance trade, which eliminated the use of food-grade sacks altogether. Jute has always been the most important natural fiber but it too suffered long decline. In 1990, 2.1 million hectares were planted in jute, which fell to 1.6 million in 2000 and is projected to slump to 1.2 million hectares by 2010, a retraction of about 3% a year. During the same period, production also fell from 3.3 million tons to 2.6 million tons and is projected to diminish to 2.3 million tons by 2010. During this period jute consumed in the developed countries fell by 40% and that consumed in developing countries by 10%.(1)…

    ‘Have a Heart, Learn, Progress and Serve’ is the NTPM’s philosophy. NTPM Holdings Berhad is one of SME in Malaysia. The company main business is manufacture and trade paper related product such as tissue papers, toilet tissue, serviettes and napkin. NTPM has began to focus on its sales and marketing effort by branding its tissue products under the brand name “PREMIER” which a name is wide known in Malaysia. This strategy is undergoing on the year of 1995. During the recession period on 1997, NTPM able to survive due the demand for NTPM’s products was well over its supply. On 2000 foreseeing the direction of its future expansion, NTPM has acquired a printing business to complement its paper operations by supplying tissue boxes for packaging of its finished goods.     In the past two decades India has transformed itself successfully from a rigid centrally-planned economy to an increasingly open and market-oriented economy, with GDP growing at an annual average rate of nearly 10%. The path and forms that India took to transform its economy were far from conventional.
