GlobalTech Role Play Reflection: I participated in the GlobalTech simulation as a consultant/observer, and I really enjoyed the opportunity to watch the simulation from all sides. From my point of view, the main problems that the two Pats faced were a mistrust of authority, disrespect, and jealousy about her recent promotion to manager level. While Dana was obviously the most contentious, both Terry and Jordan were interesting players from Pats’ point of view, as their opinions were variable and could have weighed the direction of the meeting either way. Most importantly, however, it seemed like all parties were generally against Pats’ change from the beginning, and both Pat1 and Pat2 both had the challenge of convincing the whole team that change is the best course of action for the company. During the first half of the simulation, Pat1 followed through with a number of great techniques that followed at least some of the recommendations from the Kotter model. Pat1 began by explaining the urgency of the situation by created a scenario where without the team’s help in changing to a consumer market focused GPS system, the company would go into bankruptcy in the next six months. Pat1 explained that it was up to the team to complete the change and turn around the whole company with only USD 1 million. This sense of urgency seemed to immediately persuade Terry, who felt a sense of loyalty to the company and also a drive to succeed at intellectual challenges. From there it was easy to convince Jordan of at least a need for change, as he had a lot of respect for Terry’s opinion. From there, Pat1 went on to ask about and address the concerns from the rest of the team. She was very open and listened well to all the complaints and suggestions that everyone had. Out of their discussions, Pat1 suggested that the team focused on building an easy-to-use GPS for emergency services within the consumer market. However, when he took over as CEO in 2000, the medical center was losing money for its first time in history. Kaplan had to move VMMC to become a learning organization that could be lean, and compete within a very competitive industry during a period of poor economic conditions. First, VMCC had well entrenched practices of doing things the way they have always been done referred to as "routines".1 From the heuristic perspective, the routines and minor incremental changes to the routines had worked well for the VMMC through the years with the physicians retaining their sense of entitlement and autonomy without much involvement in setting organizational goals and little requirement to work for the greater good rather than themselves. However, now there was a change in the economic and competitive environment that required a new business model that could adapt to its environment. Second, VMMC was a large facility and large organizations can be slow to change and become learning organizations. The technological environment in health care had changed rapidly and Kaplan recognized that VMMC had become inefficient. For example, improvements were needed in overall layout of the facility 's treatment areas and in vital services as lab and pharmacy.     The simulation wasn’t as intuitive as I thought at first; it took three tries and 20 steps in order to get the 61% buy in order to complete the simulation. There was one steps taken that gave a 0 or neutral buy, basically a waste of money and time. I quickly evaluated that in order to start a change process and achieve the buy in and support, activities need to be done in a certain order. I think the simulation does take into account the perceived human emotions surrounding change, however, it only takes into account the desired reaction to the change, obviously real life is a little more complex to determine. The same approach can be taken nonetheless, in using the Mckinsey 7-S model on the Global Tech simulation, the plan according to the strategy, structure, systems, skills and shared values and beliefs helped in the organizational change. First, concerning the strategy, the leader has been reactive and changed the strategy by adding the commercial sector to the company’s market focus beside the military sector. Second, concerning the structure, hiring new employees to the organization in different departments to be responsible of the new market segments has modified the company structure, but the organization continued to be only hierarchical. Therefore, during the implementation to have a cross-functional team with diversified experiences on the same table for adding value to the new strategy. Third, regarding the systems, the new strategy has required the core change team to work on different systems for enhancing the company’s performance, such as cost analysis for offering a competitive price product, employees training and development, restructuring the compensation system and improving the communication across the departments as they were not aligned. Fourth, as for the skills, the company was competent in terms of its R&D department, which provides the high-technological GPS.
