Some argue that we face the most significant financial challenges since the Great Depression and that it would financially impossible or imprudent to fund and pursue sustainable practices in Hawaii. Yet, in we are facing environmental issues such as rising temperatures and advancing oceans, emissions and extinction, habitat destruction and urban sprawl, encroaching pollution and expanding populations. Human development has provided me with a place to live, roads and highways to drive on, shopping malls and movie theaters for entertainment, hospitals for me to get vaccinated at and receive medical attention, supermarkets to buy food at, and schools to receive an education at. Yet I can also personally attest to the wonder of walking on a dew-laced…

New Hampshire, with 78.4% forest cover, is currently the second most forested state in the country with Maine being the first. However, the forest cover has been steadily declining since the 1980s. “This loss is about 17,500 acres per year, mostly due to land development” and “Every day, the average person in the USA will consume about 4.5 pounds of wood, that 's a little over a third of a two-by-four. Over the course of a year, that adds up to a 16-18" tree, a hundred feet tall” (Forest Service). Each year, the nation plants more than 5 new trees for each American. Wood is a renewable resource. Today there are certain foundations and things to do to prevent deforestation. Although we need wood to cut down for certain things, we plant three trees for every tree we cut down. This is called the 3 to 1 Ratio by Society Protecting New Hampshire Forest’s.…

We recognize that the events of 2010 have impacted many people, from local communities and businesses in the Gulf Coast region to our customers, colleagues, partners and shareholders around the world. We feel a deep sense of responsibility to everyone affected by what we do and how we do it – not just in the Gulf of Mexico, but wherever we operate. And not just this year, but every year. In this Sustainability Review, we look at what that sense of responsibility means in practice. We discuss how the accident and oil spill are shaping how we do business, and the changes we are making to our portfolio and organization. Our website plays an integral part in our sustainability reporting, covering a wider set of issues and reporting on them in more depth. The website includes detailed information about our environmental and safety performance, as well as case studies that demonstrate our sustainability efforts in action.…
