Project 3: Unfamiliar Genre Project

Formatting: Double-spaced, 1 inch margins, Times New Roman 12 pt. font
Bibliographic Documentation: At least 1 primary source, 3 secondary sources are required. We will discuss the difference in class. Parenthetic in-text, MLA citations with a works cited page are also necessary.

Option #1: Analytical Essay
Length: 6-8 pages
The Task:
For the Analytical Essay, you will first choose an unfamiliar genre that you will research and study. Each essay must contain a brief and concise summary (no more than 2 pages) of what the genre is, what it does, how it came to be known, etc. Next, you will choose an issue, focus, or creative technique through which you will analyze at least one primary source, and you will make an argument regarding that focus. Example:
Genre- Beat Poetry
Focus- Political Propaganda
Primary Source- America by Allen Ginsberg
What to Consider- How is political propaganda treated/represented by Ginsberg in America? How many different ways does Ginsberg address politics, and what does his use of multiple examples mean?

Option #2: Creative Text & Accompanying Reflection
Length: Creative Text- at least 2 pages; Reflection- 4-6 pages
The Task:
Like the first option, you will first choose an unfamiliar genre that you will research and study. Each reflection must contain a brief and concise summary (no more than 2 pages) of what the genre is, what it does, how it came to be known, etc. Next, you will choose an issue, focus, or creative technique to analyze in a primary source and replicate in your own work. Your reflection, then, will be an

    1. The first step in developing a thesis statement is to identify a topic or subject. Literary analysis essays can be written about any number of elements, or aspects, in a literary work—its characters, its settings, its events, its language, its images, its themes, or its symbols. The subject of your literary analysis essay should be something that is prominent in the novel, not something that is minor or of little importance.…

For my genre analysis I analyzed a TV infomercial against the product website of the Magic Bullet blender. These genres were very different in their design, construction, and methods of convincing customers to buy the Magic Bullet, but had the same message. The genres had similar tones, word use and a uniting feature: make the Magic Bullet look so incredible you have to purchase it. These genres goals are to convince viewers to become owners of their own Magic Bullet, and they effectively communicate why you should do that with various marketing techniques and strategies.…

2: In your essay, make specific reference to three or four secondary sources (i.e., books, articles, or websites on the writings of your two authors – not by). Do not use non-scholarly sources ending in “.com”, such as private blogs or essay-writing services (e.g., www.essays2order.com). Use MLA style for page references after each quote from a secondary source, as well as for quotes from the stories themselves (e.g., (Atwood, 11)). Be sure to connect what the secondary source says, to what you are trying to show. In addition, follow MLA style (as in your documentation tutorial/workshop) for the “Works Cited” list at the end of your report.…
