Genetically Modified Organisms: The Truth In recent decades, people have come to the idea that there is truly something sinister about genetically modified organisms. Contrary to what many people believe, genetically modified organisms possess the ability to juristically benefit the world in a number of positive ways. This is usually done by the altering of certain genes that allows organisms to generate certain proteins that when consumed by only insects, turns to a toxin and kills them, but does not change when consumed by humans or livestock. By growing plants that are increasingly resistant to insects, farmers can lower the amount of pesticides, chemicals, and machinery they are using every year which can help them save time, money, land and can help them protect and preserve the environment by reducing soil erosion, pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions (Mestel). The addition to this is, that this same process can be used in developing the genes of organisms in ways that enhance nutrition though the alteration of vitamin and mineral content in certain ingredients. Because of this technology, many companies now possess the ability to supply the necessary nutrients to countries like India and others in Africa struggling to battle against malnutrition
