Genetically Modified Organisms are Harmful
For the past 25 years the United States has been putting their people in harm's way. They have been doing this by allowing government agencies to grow and sell genetically modified foods and organisms to the public without informing them of what they're consuming (2011 responsibletechnology.org). Most people do not know that a large quantity of the foods they are eating are not natural and are actually mutations of real healthy foods that take tons of chemicals and pesticides to create. Since 1996 when genetically modified foods were introduced the rate of chronic illness almost doubled in just nine years (2015 galegroup.com). In just twelve years 383 million pounds of extra herbicides were sprayed onto crop. Since there is an extreme amount of herbicides being used the amount of toxins and residues has raised significantly. This poses a huge health threat considering some side effects include birth defects and cancer (2011 responsibletechnology.org). Currently it is impossible to tell if the food consumed by an individual is genetically modified due to the lack of regulation by the Food and Drug Administration not requiring any labels on these foods. The government needs to begin labeling these foods with stickers like they do with fruits and vegetables so people can protect themselves and future generations from these dangerous …show more content…
The evidence is so apparent the government has no other choice but to take immediate action. There needs to be research done to find a safe way to use genetically modified organism or there needs to be a band. The Food and Drug Administration needs to put labels on all genetically modified foods to ensure that American people really know exactly what they are consuming. Finally, real regulations need to be put into place to guarantee that unwarranted chemicals like herbicides and pesticides are not being used so aggressively and killing bees and eventually killing animals all the way up the food chain.
