Genetically Modified Foods Persuasive Speech
The food you are eating is killing you. These foods are genetically enhanced to make them last longer taste better, and shield themselves from pests and weeds. Genetically modified foods are in everything, you ate them for breakfast and you will eat them for lunch. You need to learn about these foods to save your family and friends from the terrible effects of these foods. You will learn what these foods are, the bad effects of them, and what will happen if we don't take action and put an end to them. These man-made foods are putting our health, wildlife, and ecosystems in danger.

A tomato called the FlavrSavr was the first genetically altered food to be put on the market. Genetically modified foods are derived from genetically modified organisms. They have specific changes introduced tot their DNA by genetic engineering. Little bits of DNA is drawn from the organism, then biotechnologists make changes to the DNA to change the characteristics of the organism. After the biotechnologist is finished changing the DNA, they inject the new DNA back into the organism. Just by changing small things in the foods we eat, we can have significant consequences for humans, plants, animals, and the ecosystem.

That may just be a few people, but the numbers will only grow as we eat more and more genetically enhanced foods. Certain types of cancers and birth defects have also been proven to be caused by eating GM foods. Over the past 20 years, the chance of getting deadly food allergies in children has tripled. Parents have to check for things their children are allergic to in everything they buy. None of thee enhanced foods are worth all of these bad health

    Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO)/Genetically Engineered (GE) foods are the result of laboratory processes which artificially insert genes into the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of food crops or animals. There are many arguments both in favor of and against mandatory labeling of GMO/GE foods. Whether or not to require labeling of GMOs or GE foods also involves the debate over the risks and benefits of food crops produced using biotechnology. However, the overarching argument is consumers have a right to know what is in their food, especially concerning products that can cause allergic reactions. According to the Campaign for Healthier Eating in America, Genetically Modified (GM) foods are linked to toxic and allergic reactions, sick, sterile, and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organ studied in lab animals (http://www.responsibletechnology.org). Because there is no scientific evidence that GMO/GE foods do or do not cause health issues in humans (because there have been no long-term studies), consumers may or may not be being harmed by GMOs. However, the safety of GMOs has been questioned by other countries. In fact, they are banned by food manufacturers in Europe and other countries, but, present in the majority of meats, produce, diary and processed foods in the United States (US). Many consumers in the US have no knowledge that they are consuming GMOs. If they did, it is now known if, similar to Europe, many would prefer to not consume GMO/GE foods. However, without proper labeling, the big issue of concern is, they do not know how to avoid them if they wanted to.…

    Since Genetically Modified Organisms have been introduced to food industry, there has been a substantial increase in food allergies in children and adults. Studies have shown how proteins produced by engineered plants (also known as GMOs) are different than the way they should be. According to Thierry Vrain in “Former Pro-GMO Scientist Speaks Out On The Real Dangers of Genetically Engineered Food”, “Inserting a gene in a genome using this technology can and does result in damaged proteins. The scientific literature is full of studies showing the engineered corn and soya contain toxic or allergenic proteins” (Vrain Par. 9). The human body works based on the proteins that come from the food you eat, and are crucially needed to help the body function. The proteins that you take in, work in different ways, some are used to build cardiac muscle or helps oxygen to every part of the body. Once the body begins taking these toxic proteins in, it will begin to break down the immune system your body has developed and will eventually leave you with no immune system leaving your body vulnerable to illness and diseases. Besides the health issues with proteins being genetically modified and causing health problems with the immune system, the amount of food allergies have increased as well. In an article by Organic Consumers Association, “GE Foods Can Cause Allergic Reactions”, “There is concern that GM foods pose an allergy risk. Currently the list of GM food products intersect with the eight most common food allergens: eggs, milk, fish, peanuts, shellfish, soy, tree nuts, and wheat” (“GE Foods Can Cause Allergic Reactions” Par. 5). The first step is competency which is preparing the bacterial cells to receive DNA. This step is getting the pores to open up so they allow the genes needed to be put in. Step two is transformation in which pGLO genes (a gene from jelly fish that glows green) are inserted via the pores. Step three is growth in which the substance is just growing, eating, and reproducing. The fourth step is isolation in which you separate the newly transformed cells from the entire population of untransformed cells. Finally, step five is expression which is the phenotypic expression in which arabinose is needed to allow the gene to transcribe and make Green Fluorescent protein (GFP).
