Gender Roles In The Giver
In The Giver everyone and everything is equal. Their system is perfect, they must obey the curfew, they must use precision of language, there is no lying, and there are no choices. Kids are watched and observed from birth. When they are twelve years old they attend a community meeting called The Ceremony of the Twelve. At this ceremony the Elders assign each twelve year old a role in the community and that will be their job for the rest of their life. There are many different types of roles such as Birth Mother, Nurturer, Doctor, Engineer, Pilot and many more. No one really knows for sure what role they will be assigned.

Jonas the main character, is just like the rest of them. He obeys the rules and is clueless about the truth. He has two close friends. One is named Fiona, she is sweet, fun, and quiet. His other friend is named Asher, he is funny, irresponsible, and clumsy. At The Ceremony of the Twelve Fiona was given the role of Caretaker of the Old and Asher became Assistant Director of Recreation. Everyone was assigned a role except Jonas. Jonas was skipped on purpose because he was selected for a very special role, Receiver of Memory. It had been ten years since the last time they selected anyone for this role. The Receiver of Memory is the most honored job. The following day Jonas met The Giver to start training. The Giver explained that his job was to transfer all the memories of the world and generations before them to Jonas, the Receiver of Memory. Jonas laid down on the bed and The Giver put his hands on Jonas’ back and transmitted a memory to Jonas. The first memory was of snow and riding downhill on a sled. Jonas loved it he felt happiness. Through The Giver, Jonas experienced many new feelings, like, pain, love, death, suffering, starvation, war, and many more. First of all, in Jonas’ community everyone lives by the community’s rules. It means their food, their family, their decisions are chosen for them because they are under the community’s control. However, in our community people can make their own decisions and choose their favorite food to eat. Second, in Jonas’s community the Elders control the population. It means that kids are not raised in a house. However, in our community people have their own children and it does not matter how many children they want to have (INF).
