Who Is Jona In The Giver Brave
In the novel The Giver, one of the most interesting and deeply described character was Jonas. Jonas is a normal boy in the Community, and when he turns a 12, he is assigned one of the most honored assignments: the Receiver. The Receiver is given the outside world’s memories from the Giver and keeps them until the next Receiver comes. Jonas showed characteristics of bravery, selflessness, and determination.
When assigned the Receiver, Jonas is told he must stay brave to meet the goals of the Receiver. The first time Jonas had to show his bravery was taking on the Giver’s painful memories. Jonas had to feel pain he had never felt or known before and he had to continue receiving them until all the memories left the Giver. Jonas never knew what was coming and had to be prepared for the worst. The second time Jonas had to exhibit his bravery was when he had to go against the Community rules. Jonas was told he could lie to anyone, so when his parents asked him to share his feelings, to “protect” the memories, he had to lie, which was very courageous and not what he grew up doing. The final time Jonas was brave was when he had to follow through with his dangerous plan to escape the Community. When Jonas helps the Giver relieve his pain, Jonas was introduced selfless. No matter the pain, Jonas just wanted to help the Giver out of his grieving. At the end of the book, Jonas rediscovered?? his selflessness when he saved Gabe from release. Although saving him was twice the work for Jonas, he saved Gabe from death. Along with taking Gabe out of the Community, Jonas was so kind and compassionate, that he took some of his most comforting and favorite memories and gave them to Gabe to relax him.
