Geel Piet: Analysis Of The Frog
Quote:
“It is like this, small baas. The professor is known as ‘Amasele’ (‘The Frog’), because he plays his peeano at night when the prison is quiet. To the Zulus the frog makes always the loudest music at night, much louder than the cricket or the owl. So it is simple, you see. You are the small boy of the frog, which makes you a tadpole” (230).

Quote Analysis: This quotation said by Geel Piet, talks about how the prisoners think of Peekay as a tadpole. He is the tadpole and Doc is known as the frog. Geel Piet is foreshadowing that Peekay will one day be a successor of Doc. When it says “the frog makes always the loudest music at night, much louder than the cricket or the owl.” it tells us, literally, out of all the people in the prison,

The character Hop Frog in “The Eight Chained Ourang-Outangs” is justified in the murdering of the King and his seven ministers. The first reason is that Hop Frog is not there voluntarily. He is captured, along with a dancer named Trippetta, by a general and is presented as a gift to the King. This is another joke the King laughed at. The two dwarfs are used as entertainment for the King throughout the story. The King describes Hop Frog’s value as a “trebled” since he is a jester, a dwarf, and a cripple. He is made fun of the way he walks, even though he cannot help it. The King goes to the extreme by making fun of his disability: “In fact, Hop-Frog could only get along by a sort of interjectional gait-something between a leap and a wriggle-a…

“Close Encounters of the Amphibious Kind” by Tammy D. Lee and Jane L. Lubischer discusses a lesson that integrates physical science, focusing on the concept of sound, and life science, focusing on how sound is created in nature. This lesson concentrates on frogs, how they make sound, how the sounds they make are different, and the purposes of these different sounds. I will reflect on this article by summarizing it, discussing the standards accompanying it, and how I would implement this lesson in my future classroom. When discussing how I would implement this I will focus on modifications, processes, skills, and knowledge to be cognizant of, preconceptions and misconceptions to address, safety issues to address, how to include a math component,…

The structure of the poem helps to show the speaker’s response to the death. The poems structure is laid out in steps; first with the cutting of the toad’s leg, “A toad the power mower caught, chewed and clipped of a leg.” Secondly, with the laying under the cineraria leaves, “With a hobbling hop has got under the cineraria leaves.” Last part if the structure reveals the toad’s final thoughts and its final hour of living, “As still as stone, and soundlessly attending, dies toward deep monotone.”…

    Boiling Frog Syndrome

During the late nineteenth century several European scientists attempted to establish, and later contradict, a hypothesis generally known as the Boiling Frog Syndrome. Consequently, the Boiling Frog Syndrome has become a widespread didactic anecdote demonstratively used for subordinating, ignoring, or somehow neglecting changes to the supporting environment such that some unexpected and perilous event subsequently occurs. And regardless whether or not this is a fallacy, its premise offers an excellent illustration of how diminutive changes in any environment can conceal or camouflage themselves at the risk of a variety of threats. Certainly of little surprise, a frog placed in boiling water will leap to safety at the first opportunity if…

While I may not be a frog, I can very much find myself relating to Kermit the Frog with his phrase, “It’s not easy being green.” One might laugh and say, “Alana! What would you know about what it’s like as a frog?” And the answer is I don’t. But I do know what it means to be a minority, which is what Kermit is; I do not know very many talking frogs. However like Kermit, in American history people have been set back because they were different from what society deemed “normal.”…

In “An Advancement of Learning” Heaney recalls on his childhood fear of rats. This is due to his experiences of fear growing up on a farm as a child. The rats provide a link between his childhood and his inner-city life as an adult. “An August Midnight” is based on Hardy’s beliefs that all animals were conscious beings worthy of respect based on the evolutionary theory that all living things are related. This interest is also evident in the close up acute details of the insects’ anatomy “winged, horned and spined”.…

Mark Twain vividly captured the flavor of the Old West in his story, “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.” Twain was a regionalist whose stories focused largely on America’s Old West. He illustrated the essence of the time and area using local color. The Old West was known for the lawlessness and excessive gambling of its citizens. For this reason, Twain used gambling allusions such as “found him flush” and “risk two-and-a-half.” In addition, Twain captured the spoken mannerisms of the people. Old West colloquialisms include words such as “thish-yer,” meaning this here, and “bully rag,” or intimidate. He also included figures of speech that were created in the West, “throwed up the sponge” being a prime example. Twain’s characters…
