“One of our civil liberties is the pursuit of happiness, which homosexual people are not allowed to chase.” Sadly, many homosexual couples are denied the right to get married because some people believe it’s immoral. These homosexual couples should be granted these rights because it violates their constitutional rights, creates a second class of citizens, and would help the economy.
The 14th Amendment is a prime example of gay rights being protected under the United States Constitution. “The amendment addresses citizenship rights and equal protection of the laws…” Forbidding homosexual people the same rights that heterosexual people is denying them the equal protection of the laws. A man once said, in regards to a state’s law against homosexual marriage that it, “both unconstitutionally burdens the exercise of the fundamental right to marry and creates an irrational classification on the basis of sexual orientation.” Under the equal protection laws, the right to marry whomever one wishes, should be protected. Also, in the 14th Amendment, there is an act called Due Process laws, which states, “No person should be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law. “ Denying homosexual people the ability to get married not only denies them the life they deserve and want but it also denies them liberty. Excluding the homosexual people from their rights of the constitution is also creating another class of people.
Through all of American history we have been fighting for equality of all citizens, fighting discrimination. Although, when the American people are denying their so-called equals the same rights they have, they are not only discriminating but also creating a second class of citizens. “On July 25, 2014 Miami-Dade County Circuit Court Judge Sarah Zabel ruled Florida's gay marriage ban unconstitutional and stated that the ban serves only to hurt, to discriminate, to deprive same-sex couples and their families of equal dignity, to label and treat them as second-class citizens, and to deem them unworthy of participation in one of the fundamental institutions of our society." Meaning, depriving everyone the same rights creates a group of people that are below the rest and not equal to everyone else. “All across our country, in every region, every social class, every race and ethnicity, every religion or non-religion, people get married. For many if not most people, moreover, marriage is not a trivial matter. It is a key to the pursuit of happiness, something people aspire to—and keep aspiring to, again and again, even when their experience has been far from happy.” Think about it, your friend, Sarah, can marry Stew, but you can’t just because you’re a man too, it doesn’t matter if you love each other. You would feel left out of the typical American life cycle, like you don’t matter enough, like a second-class citizen. “We have joined together to recognize equality for racial minorities, women, people with disabilities, immigrants...” If people can get past interracial marriages why can’t they get past homosexual couples? Just like African American people, the gays are not a second class and they deserve to be able to take place in the same activities as everyone else. On a more selfish note, legalizing gay marriage would help the economy. “In the first year that gay marriage was legal in New York City, the city reaped $259 million, thanks to license fees and wedding-related spending…” With 10% of the US population being gay, there are so many potential millions going down the drain because it’s not legal for them to marry. “even ordinary same-sex couples could lose as much as $500,000 over a lifetime because they can’t marry and therefore can’t get employers’ spousal health insurance, among other disadvantages. As a result, people in same-sex couples are much more likely to be uninsured than are people in different-sex couples.” When people without insurance have medical needs they can’t pay for it costs us all, if homosexual couples could get married we would all be able to benefit. “The New York comptroller’s office estimated that the legalization of gay marriage in New York State last year would add $142 million to New York City’s economy from wedding-related purchases and tourism revenue in the three years after the law’s passage. The state economy could stand to gain another estimated $184 million. The additional tourism alone will generate an estimated 2,000 jobs.” More people, more money, more jobs, everyone wins! Legalizing gay marriage would not only make them happy but also help everyone else. People think that homosexual couples shouldn’t be allowed to marry because “Marriage is for procreation and should not be extended to same-sex couples because they cannot produce children together.” Although it is true that they can not have they’re own babies, gay couples are 5 times more likely to adopt a child or baby than any heterosexual couple. “Children need both a mother and a father.” This is a very stereotypical idea that is extremely incorrect. It is proven that homosexual couples grow a more stable and stronger relationship that heterosexual couples. “If the child is properly heterosexual and they are put in foster homes without any thought or consideration of who they are or what their identity is, that’s not right.” Most homosexual people are all about being themselves and not hiding who they really are, this is a very unique thing many parents attempt but fail to accomplish. Meaning the homosexual couples would have a very special and great thing to put on the table for the children. Why should children, who are unwanted by their own birth parents be denied the love of nice couple who wants them more than anything?
