Johnson believed the Civil Rights Act to be more important than the presidency. While in a discussion about the civil rights bill, Johnson was told: “... it’s going to cost you the South and cost you the election,” to which he responded, “If that’s the price I’ve got to pay, I’ll pay it gladly.” (Document C) Johnson’s response shows that he’d rather lose the presidential election than lose the civil rights bill. In another instance, after Johnson was asked why him so long to act against segregation, he responded with, “Free at last, free at last. Thank God almighty I’m free at last.” (Document E) Johnson was finally “free” from his expectations and obligations as a Texas senator, and political gain was no longer a factor in his decisions. These responses ultimately show how Johnson’s personal beliefs were the deciding factor in his signing of the Civil Rights Act, because he would have signed the bill even if it led to him losing the…

Carter showed himself prudent and often made the wise decision over the popular vote. Jimmy Carter aspired to make government competent and compassionate and his achievements were notable.…

Though we might never know his motives, we can get close, and that is all we can really ever do. Johnson was a good person and a great politician that valued others and wanted to be president. Johnson had a lot to lose and a lot to gain from signing the act, but in the end the good overpowered the bad. He would win the hearts of some and the hatred of others, but none of the hate would overpower the gratefulness of those who just wanted to be equal to those that are seemingly more superior. He has changed the world and nobody knows where we would be if he didn't make the sacrifices that he…

Washington being an astute observer, realized that being steadfast in the positions he expressed, the views of the time in which he lived would not allow him to achieve his goals. He realized he had to be flexible in the positions in which he took. Washington was a study in contradiction and a master of compromise. Although his actions were a reflection of the times in which he lived, his self-held beliefs in many cases did not reflect the times. An example of this would be that he owned slaves but was for the abolition of slavery. A year before his death, in a conversation with a friend remarked “I can foresee that nothing but the rooting out of slavery can perpetuate the existence of our union.” Another example would be rather than issuing an…
