When choosing who you would like to vote for in an election, you must look for key characteristics in the nominees. Character is a major component and factor of being a president because it reveals that you are able to handle situations without letting anger interfere. Being reliable and most honest helps you gain trust of your people. Leadership in all is what defines your capabilities to be able to make a change for your country. The two nominees of the 1896 presidential election were William McKinley and William Jennings Bryan. McKinley was the Republican candidate from Ohio as Bryan was the Democratic candidate from Nebraska. McKinley was the nominee to win the election of 1896 by only 6%.
William Jennings Bryan was known as the "Great Commoner" or the "Boy Orator". He was the one that was supported by the south and west. Bryan believed the coinage of silver would help farmers, but he couldn't get support in the east area. I do firmly believe that William Jennings Bryan had great intentions that he could do better for America in helping the farmers by using silver. Although silver and gold had their pros, in the end, gold was more beneficial than silver. In essence, I would say McKinley did not do much to convince people to vote for him since he was popular already, so it has its pros and cons when speaking about these two nominees during this presidential election. Bryan went out and gave numerous speeches a day and had his points, but McKinley knew what would be most beneficial. McKinley once said, “That’s all a man can hope for during his lifetime - to set an example - and when he is dead, to be an inspiration for history." I affirm McKinley's choices allowed America to grow and prosper
