Future Nurse Educator Should Identify Weaknesses In Their Current Practice
As previously mentioned, an educator should identify weaknesses in their current practice, which should be modified to enhance their future instructional practices and facilitate learning among various populations (Oerman, 2015). At the end of the learning activity, I clearly failed to provide the nurses adequate time to complete the evaluation questionnaire, which could have been the reason that 75% of the nurses failed to provide feedback regarding future learning needs. In my opinion, this questions was critical, because as a future nurse educator I want to ensure that learners are provided with activities that enhance their professional development and clinical practice (Billings & Halstead, 2016). As a result, I plan to allow future participants at least 15 minutes to complete a similar evaluation questionnaire. In addition, I failed to allow the nurses to provide feedback regarding the appropriateness of the learning environment. O’Mara, McDonald, Gillespie, Brown, and Miles (as cited in Billings & Halstead, 2016) suggests that learning environments must “... be supportive and conducive to learning ...” to assist healthcare providers to develop the qualities and clinical skills necessary to become competent professionals (p. 282). I also learned that an educator should be aware of various teaching styles. For this teaching activity, I assumed the role of a coach (i.e., demonstrator). Gill (2017) suggests that knowing one’s teaching style, that is through self-evaluation, can better assist an educator to identify weaknesses in their practice, which can be modified to engage participants in the learning process.
