Friendship in the Bean Trees
Friendship is the most important thing in life. Taylor realizes this through Estevan and Esperanza. She learns that to get through tough times, you need friends to help you get through. Through Estevan and Esperanza, Taylor learns the love, loss, and loss of friendship.
Love and compassion are clearly present in Taylor, Estevan, and Esperanza's relationship. When Esperanza was in a time of need, Taylor confronted her. Taylor could have sat back and watched Esperanza suffer and get Estevan all to herself; but Taylor had such a compassionate personality that she helped Esperanza in her time of need. Taylor also had the courage to go and speak to her although they had never had a real conversation prior to that. Taylor, although she had feelings for Estevan, did not express how she felt for him. Taylor did not share her feelings with Estevan because she cherished Estevan and Esperanza's friendship. This act of affection was one of the most admirable acts that Taylor ever achieves.
Although Taylor, Estevan and Esperanza's relationship has love and compassion it also has plenty of loss. The first sign of loss in their relationship was when Taylor found out that Esperanza's child, Ismene, had been kidnapped. Taylor did everything in her power to help Esperanza and Estevan cope with her child's loss. Taylor learned through the story of Ismene, how hard life can actually be. When Taylor left Oklahoma she had to leave behind Estevan as well. Leaving Estevan was a very distressing event in Taylor's life. When Taylor left Oklahoma her leaving Estevan was as big of deal as Esperanza leaving Turtle, and Turtle burring her doll.
Taylor, Estevan, and Esperanza are the best of friends; they would do anything for each other. They are always there for each other no matter what obstacle stands in there way. Taylor, Estevan and Esperanza, although probably will never see each other again, will always have a part of one

The Three Sisters tell Esperanza that even when she’s moved onto a new destiny, she must always return to Mago Street and appreciate that this was the place that shaped her new life. When told this, Esperanza “didn’t know what to say, It was as if she could read [her] mind, as if she knew what [Esperanza] had wished for, and [she] felt ashamed for having made such a selfish wish” (105). The Three Sisters are one of the most important guide figures in the whole novel, because they encourage Esperanza and lead her to recognize that her main goal of leaving and feeling like she didn’t belong on Mango Street, was really a false quest.…

As a child, Esperanza wants only escape from mango Street. Her dream of independents and "self-definition" also means leaving her family behind without any responsibilities to her family. Throughout the boo, her has also faced some situation where is feels ashamed to be part of the Mango Street community and in some instances refuses to admit she has anything to do with mango street. At the beginning of the book near the earlier chapters, Esperanza feels very insecure about herself in general along with the house that she lives in. As mentioned before she doesn’t want to discuss her name nor where she lives. In the chapter of "The House on Mango Street", "a nun from my school passed by and saw me playing out front. The downstairs dromat had been boarded up because it had been robbed two days before the owner had painted on the wood YES WE' RE OPEN so as not to lose business. Where do you live? She asked. There, I said pointing up to the third floor. You live there? She responded. You live there? The way she said it, made me feel like nothing". This quote reinforces the fact of how apprehensive and shameful Esperanza is during the beginning of the story, where one can clearly see the state of insecurity of Esperanza. This is ultimately contrasted through the progression of the book when Esperanza maturity is shown in the quote," Passing bums will ask, can I come in? I'll offer them the attic, ask them to stay, because I know how it is to be without a house" through this quote you could clearly see the juristic growth from the beginning of the book. Esperanza grows out of her childish and arrogant state to a more confident becomes to feel more empathy towards others, showing her transformation into a confident mature women. Esperanza will even a homeless a place to stay regardless the state or how the house looks like, but she…

Isabel Allende documents Esteban Trueba's triumphs and defeats in The House of the Spirits. After leaving, his mother and sister, and starting a new and independent life, Esteban changes much. For the first time he is successful and wealthy. He feels as if he has no problems, mainly because he does not have a family to weigh him down. Trueba's move to Three Marias seems to appease his hunger temporarily, before his monstrous, demanding, and ever growing needs overwhelms him. The type of lifestyle achieved by Esteban Trueba in Three Marias far surpassed that of living with his mother and sister, however only brief moments of satisfaction are incurred. These, previously mentioned, moments created a hunger for perfection and greed that would continue perpetuate at any cost. Receiving a letter from Ferula brings back memories for Esteban of his sad life with her and his mother, which forces him to endure his memories of poverty and pain. He even remembers the smell of medicine, which had encompassed their home. These memories force Esteban to reflect on the reasons…

In chapter six Esperanza gets to her new home. She isn’t very happy with the living conditions. I can’t imagine living in some place that was like a stable. Then when Esperanza is told that she would be responsible for sweeping and taking care of the babies I remembered that when she said that she could work earlier that everyone laughed. This is probably not going to go well. She had never taken care of anyone or anything before. She didn’t know how to wash clothes or to change diapers or how to sweep. She was too proud to admit that she didn’t know how to sweep so she just acted like she knew what she was doing. She was determined but she created a big mess in front of a large group of women and Marta. This part reminded me of the movie The Princess Protection Program. In this story a girl who was a princess is put into a “normal” life where she is expected to work and go to school. In both stories the girls start without knowing how to take care of themselves and are humiliated in front of a large group because of their lack of knowledge. In the Princess Protection Program the girl learns to take care of herself and ends up helping others. I hope that things work out the same for Esperanza.…
