Four Day School Week Research Paper
Should Portsmouth students go to school for four of five days a week? Portsmouth is a small school district in central Rhode Island. This town's council is not giving the schools enough money, so that is why there are so many budget cuts. Many of the decisions of the school system are pressured upon the school committee. This school's committee, like every school committee, has been elected to office by the parents and the town's people. Portsmouth should have a four day school week because the four day week saves money, provides extra opportunities for both parents and students, and gives students more time to get better grades. First, Portsmouth schools will be able to save money with a four day school week. Saving money will be able to …show more content…
If there is a busy schedule between both parents during the day, Fridays off for students will help parents work and not worry about their kids if their kids were to go to a family member's house or sleep over a friend's house. Parents will save money if students go to their family or friends house instead of the parents hiring a baby sitter. A four day school week may come in handy if you have the entire Friday off to schedule appointments with doctors or dentists. If there was a Friday a student was taken out of school to go to the dentist, but the dentist was packed, he would be late to go back to school. Four day school weeks may alter that a little, say on a normal Friday, that the dentist would be full of students, but if there was no school on Friday, then there would be any line to wait in, and no rush to get back to school before school is over. The other upside of having Fridays off is that parents can do errands with out interruptions. If students have Fridays off, they can go to a friend's house so that their parents can run errands without interruption. According to Jami Dow, a mother who moved to Hot Springs, South Dakota ( a district that has a four day school week) three years ago to be closer to her parents, said, "Many families use the extra day to schedule doctor and dentist

Schools looking to save energy and money investigate the four-day school week as a possible solution because although it probably would not use up less energy, it would certainly help in saving some money. One issue with saving energy is that on the fifth day, most schools would still remain open for sporting events, community gatherings, tutoring or other extracurricular activities (Work). The schools would save money on the wages of the cafeteria workers and bus drivers who were not needed on Fridays (Work). However, those people would be angry because that is how they make their living and take care of their families. Cutting salaries could negatively affect the standard of living for the area, making it less appealing to new families.…

Bus expenses eat up a sizable amount of the money. Webster County in Kentucky saved $300,000 in transportation, utility and insurance costs after switching seven schools to a four day week instead of closing one (Kingsbury). Also in Caldwell Parish, Louisiana, the schools switched to a four day and projected to save about $135,000 (Kingsbury). In addition cutting bus expenses, money will be saved on lunch meals and not paying staff on what would be the fifth day. Lastly, the money saved through switching to a four day school week could be used to fund new courses or extracurricular activities for…

P.O, senators and judge, I stand as Senator Ortega to keep start times the same for the sake of everyone . School start times will cause a burden in many situations. Moving school start times later will result in increased costs to school systems and unacceptable disruption to many families. Advocates — and editorial boards — may choose to minimize or ignore these impacts, but local school boards cannot. School boards are responsible for balancing competing priorities in the face of limited resources, and should consider return on investment before embarking on such changes. If four day weeks were introduced to schools, the students and schools will both benefit. The schools will save a significant amount of money and students will excel academically and behavior will improve drastically. Whenever we have a student/teacher holiday, less students are absent and behave because they are looking forward to less days of the week. When students have less days to worry about, it will make them work harder so they can finish of the week sooner.…

Personally, for myself as a future teacher, and for my own children, I prefer the traditional schedule for schools. My main reason is that as a child, I loved the long summer breaks, playing with my friends, vacation, summer camp, and spending time with my family. Now, as a parent, I look forward to my children experiencing the same. This assignment forced me think more deeply about the issue and look beyond my dreams of long summer vacations. The main purpose of schools it to educate. The idea of changing the 5 day school week to a 4 day school week at first looks very attractive to both students and teachers. You would think that with a 3 day weekend in which both students and teachers could rest out properly and arrive to school prepared and ready for the next week would be better than a 2 day weekend, would it? Children need to develop their social skills and physical skills which can all be done with after school activities but is it feasible with the 4 day school week? The answer is no, as attractive as the 4 day school week seems, it won’t bring any positive aspects. With a longer weekend there will be longer school days, shorter breaks and more classes per week. Since there will be less time and just as many subjects some fun activities and subjects will get cut such as – school trips, art, music, physical education and drama which are also vital skills that need to be learnt during school hours. Getting set piles of homework over the 3 day weekend which was meant to be relaxing and soothing, Due to less school days and hours there will be shorter holidays in which will probably also be full of homework. Students will get too little sleep and constantly be tired and may not have time to properly eat or get an eating disorder. But that also counts for the teachers; they will have to plan so many lessons and will be spending all their days marking all of the homework which had to be caught up on due to the 4 day school week.…

Teachers have a very stressful job, keeping a classroom of children in the seats for a whole school day. Some of these children may be hyperactive, some may be badly behaved or uncontrollable. Their own parents may be unable to cope with just one of them, yet teachers have to deal with as many as forty children at a time. Furthermore, a teacher's job is tedious and monotonous. They have to prepare lessons day in and day out, standing in front of one class after another. The long holidays will give them a chance to relax and recharge their batteries. Furthermore, teachers can attend courses during the long holidays. These courses will give them more ideas, skills and inspiration.…
