Foreshadowing and Dramatic Irony in Death and the Maiden
Foreshadowing is the warning or the indication that something else is going to happen later on in the story. In Death and the Maiden, Ariel Dorfman uses this literary device to the maximum, exploring all the different ways he can make the reader predict or foresee what’s going to happen next. However, Dorfman also takes on the audience’s ideas and implements dramatic irony, giving the plot a twist of events and making the audience question themselves and their own theories as to why the character acts that way or why the author set things as they are.
Dorfman takes the idea of dramatic irony when referring to the characters and their roles in the play.
The greatest contrast in the play is between Paulina and Gerardo.
Paulina Salas, a forty year old woman, waits for her husband late at night when she sees a car come towards her house. At first, Paulina is presented as the typical housewife, scared, insecure, loyal and loving towards her husband, who might even feel inferior, since she feels safer and secure when she has the gun.
There is, however, an understatement, between the roles Paulina and her husband, Gerardo Escobar, play.
First he calls her ‘Poor little love’ (Act 1, Scene 1, p.4) and continues to see her as his little, dependant, fragile, used woman, that can only do what women at the time were supposed to do; housework.
Yet, during their conversations she only gives him sharp, short responses, most of the time seeming even a bit harsh:
GERARDO: I’m really not in the mood for arguing, but we had agreed that…
PAULINA: You were supposed to do it. I take care of the house, and you take care of-
GERARDO: You don’t want help but afterward you…
PAULINA: -the car at least.
GERARDO: …afterward you complain.
PAULINA: I never complain.
GERARDO: This is an absurd discussion. What’re we fighting about? I’ve already forgotten what we…
PAULINA: We’re not fighting, darling. You accused me of not fixing your spare…

The most deliberate example of foreshadowing comes from a character named Moishe. Moishe an old man befriends young Eliezer and teaches him about Kabbalah, but he's thrown out from Sighet along with all the other foreign Jews and taken to Poland by the Germans. They were forced into the woods and were made to dig their own mass grave. They then killed each man, woman, and child - but Moishe escapes and returns back to…

Foreshadowing is when the author gives a hint or warning to something that is going to happen. Foreshadowing holds the reader's interest because they try to use these clues to figure out what happens next. “An abrupt sound startled him. Off to the right he heard it, and his ears, expert in such matters could not be mistaken. Again he heard the sound, and again. Somewhere, off in the blackness, someone had fired a gun three times” (69). This passage is foreshadowing because the sound did not sound like an animal. Rainsford would later figure out that the sound was a human.…

Actions exerted by the characters and also physical objects can encourage the reader into making a decision. The gun that Paulina uses against doctor Miranda is a crucial object that alters the audience's views and opinions on Paulina. Her possession of the gun gives her a sense of power and masculinity that she did not have before. This power makes her appear far less innocent and far more dangerous than she appeared to be before. By possessing the gun, Paulina is suddenly at a higher level of power than the other two men, resulting in an inverse in the usual chain of power (men have more power than women). This gun puts her above men, making her seem more dangerous to the audience, therefore making them more inclined to believing that she is crazy or sick. This weariness from the audience for Paulina's health drastically increases when she suddenly fires a shot out of the blue. The fact that she looked very surprised after the shot was made shows that Paulina does not really know what she is doing, and also gives her a sort of crazy…

To foreshadow is to give a hint or a suggestion of a forthcoming event. Flannery O'Connor uses the foreshadowing effect adequately in "A Good Man Is Hard to Find." There were many hints and suggestions that something unpleasant was going to happen in this story. The moment the grandmother first speaks of the misfit, we can assume he will show up later in the story because he is headed in the same direction as the family. Close to the ending, when the gunshots are heard from the woods, we can assume that the situation cannot get much worse.…

For example, the characters in this play always get into fights and say things to “ruffle the other side’s feathers” and as a result of this tension, the two main characters commit suicide, without thinking about how to approach the situation rationally. For instance, at the very beginning of the text, the Capulet guards try to provoke the Montague guards by “bite(ing) [their] thumb at them, which is disgrace if they bear it” (I.i.43-44). This then results in a small fight and the Prince of Verona comes to warn them of the consequences. (This can also be an example of foreshadowing because now the audience knows that someone will endure a penalty as a result of this new…
