Food Insecurity Research Paper
Food insecurity has become a major issue worldwide, but I believe that taking care of food insecurity of college campuses should be the focus of our resources. With 15.6 million households suffering from food insecurity it is no surprise that this food epidemic reaches into college campuses and affects the lives of many students (United States Department of Agriculture). College students are working to expand their knowledge and create an environment that is supplemental to succeeding in college. When nutrition is low students suffer academically. College students need support to better their nutrition and food intake without busting their budgets so that they can thrive in college and go into a working career with a good base. Food insecurity on college campuses is a prominent issue because students are financially strapped because they are paying for classes, living, and textbooks. South Dakota State University currently has a food program that is required for freshman and sophomores. This program is framed in that the student pays a certain amount of money at the beginning of the semester and that money is used for buying food on campus. There are a few major issues with this program. First, some student may not eat …show more content…
Providing opportunities for students to receive food that is beneficial to their overall health may decrease the freshman fifteen or help those who are financially unable to pay for the amount of food they need to stay active. Educating staff, professors, and students about other resources or ways they can increase their health would benefit them in the long run by making wiser choices. Students may be lost as to how they are supposed eat in order to achieve the best brain activity. By educating them we can decrease stress levels of food insecurity and helping them focus on

The money deposited into this account is most often used to eat at the buffet service in the dining commons. Penn State Housing and Food Services works to provide a wide array of eating options for all students, including vegan, vegetarian and kosher items. However, the needs of students with severe food allergies and intolerances are underrepresented in the dining commons. The labeling above each dish includes only a minimal amount of information: the name of the dish, serving size, caloric content, and meatless or vegan status. While students can ask workers of the commons if a particular dish contains a particular allergen, the servers may not be fully aware of potential cross contaminants.
