Folkway Violation

For my folkway violation I chose to position myself six inches away from someone during a conversation. I chose to try this particular one because I knew my mom would give me the best, honest reaction. She has always had a small pet peve that was people getting in her personal space. I thought to myself this is the perfect norm violation for me to use. I was able to easily approach my mom at home where she would be completely clueless of the stunt.
I began planning the night before by thinking of exactly what to talk about in our conversation. I figured to make it seem normal I would just ask her about her day at work like I do almost every day. The plan was all set and ready to go I just had to wait for her to get home from work tomorrow.
The next day I was getting ready to leave for class when she walked in the backdoor. She had brought home a few groceries so I helped her carry them up the stairs. It was then I began to ask her about her day at work. She first began to tell me how she had a rough day because some of her co workers came in late. She wasn’t in the best mood but I still kept inching closer. After about thirty seconds she gave a confused look and awkwardly began backing up. I couldn’t help but to laugh at the look she gave me. I started explaining that it was an experiment for my sociology class and it wasn’t until then that she found humor in the situation. We laughed together for a few seconds and she asked me why did I choose her? I told her that I knew she would give the most honest response. I couldn’t have asked for a better reaction. My mom was definitely the perfect person for this norm violation. I honestly thought she was going to start screaming at me when I was moving closer. I’m glad she stayed cool and got a kick out of the whole

I made it clear that I was on the phone by breathing a little louder on the mouthpiece, and I could hear hers, but there was a silence longer than normal, breaking another social rule of long awkward greetings. She finally greeted me with a questioning “Hello?” I believe that she may have actually been surprised to hear my jovial response finally leading us into our conversation. The lack of greeting on my end, where the social norm places responsibility in that situation, was an obvious “speed bump” that hindered the course of the conversation and, in fact, took precedence over it.…

I just sat there for 15 minutes spacing out until she slapped me in the face and walked away, at that moment I knew she liked me. The next day I told all my friends, they all said the same thing “It was just a coincidence”, I thought otherwise. The next morning I walked up to her and asked her how her day was. She responded with “Good” while yawning. I could tell she had a rough time falling asleep last night. Almost like a weight was on top of her the entire night. I took her to the movies that night and we watched ‘Minions”. The movie was 1 hour and 47 minutes, after the movie we went to ‘Potbelly’s’ on a romantic date. After that we headed to my house, things were starting to get serious. I walked up into my room and found her already lying on the bed, she was in a short red nightgown. We start talking and she tells me how romantic the movie and the dinner was. We laid down in bed together and watched cartoons for a while until we both…

In today’s society, social norm violations are what hold American culture, while separating us as distinct individuals. We have unwritten rules of how we are expected to behave in a certain way whether it’s in a public or private gatherings. They can change throughout time “Norms are transmitted through a process of socialization, by which every member of society is subtly trained to appreciate and follow these norms.”(Williams,2011) because of these unwritten rules we have a different minds set as time passes, if we travel a few decades back in time, the way we dress or behave can all be violations. By observing and committing a norm I have realized that the power of society pressures us to behave in a certain matter for…

For my norm violation, I decided to go out into a public place and briefly interact with complete strangers. To achieve this, I decided to simply say hi to individuals as they passed by me. In picking my location, I wanted to be somewhere with a lot of foot traffic. Ultimately, I decided to go to Fred Meyer on a Saturday, when I knew it would be busier, and start saying hi to unsuspecting shoppers. Even though this was a minor norm violation, it still made me feel very uncomfortable. Each time I went to speak I became nervous and scared people would respond to me negatively. After pushing through the awkwardness, however, and saying hello to large handful of people, I seemed to be getting a handful of the same reactions. People would either…

    Sociology 101 Social Norms

Harry Patel 9/03/2008 Sociology 101, section 8 Social Norms: Conformity and Deviance One of the norms I broke was talking to someone in a public bathroom, while peeing. It was very ocward talking to the guy next to me. One of the reason I felt ocward talking to him was because, you are not suppose to talk to the guy next to you. While you are doing your business you look at the wall in front of you. When you are done you wash your hands, and leave. No one talks to anyone they don’t know, even if they do know the person next to them they won’t talk to them while they are peeing. No one was taught to do this, you learned by observing. But when the guy next to you starts talking you don’t know how to react. That’s how the guy next to me reacted. First of all this field stimulation took place in AMC Theater bathroom, right after the movie Eagle Eye finished. My prediction before starting the field stimulation was that no one will talk to me and pretend they didn’t hear me. When I enter the bathroom there were few people in the bathroom all the urinal were full because I had to do the field stimulation I waited for one of the urinals to open up. While I was waiting for the urinals to open up I didn’t want to do the field stimulation. The reason I didn’t want to do it was because there were lots of people in the bathroom, and I didn’t want anyone to get mad at me. One of the guy finished and stepped away from the urinal washed his hand and, like what you are suppose, to do he didn’t talk to anyone. I walked over to the open urinal and started doing my business. The guy next to me was done and walked away, right when I got there. This guy in his late 20’s started using the urinal next to me. I didn’t know what to say at first. I was thinking about just saying Hi. I couldn’t get myself to say it, but finally very scared and nervous I said hi. I don’t know if he heard me or not, but he didn’t say anything. So I got even more nervous. I said it even louder hi. He gave me a…

I was on the train and I overheard these two older ladies having a conversation in Spanish. At the next stop, one of the ladies got off and I took the time to familiarize myself. I learned that her name was Roberta. Luckily, she understood and spoke English, so I explained that it was an assignment for school. She agreed and I began by introducing myself and asking for her name and how she was. She replied that she was good and she asked me and I responded the same way. I asked her about her day and where she was from and she asked me where I was from, how was school, and what class I liked the most. The conversation wasn’t long, but it was longer than I thought it would be. The conversation eventually ended when she had to get off at her…

When I broke the norms I actually broke two and didn’t even know it until I was done with my acting. The two social norms that I broke were, wearing pajamas to the movie theatre with my boyfriend and being rude to authority such as elders. When my boyfriend picked me up for the movies, he just looked at me strangely. I know he wanted to ask why did I have on pajamas but he just kept quiet. By the way I did bring a extra pair of clothes with me, so I wouldn’t look like an idiot that whole night. Well anyway, on our way to the movies, my boyfriend just kept staring at me, but mind you he never said a word. When we went to get the tickets I received many looks from people and…

    Breaking Social Norms

Over the passed week I was required to conduct a social experiment where I had to perform social deviance, or break socially established norms, then observe my society to see how they reacted to my “misconduct.” The experiment that I conducted was an example of informal deviance, where no one punished me and there was no risk of any punishment. It involved me riding a walled elevator (not one of those elevators that have all-glass walls) at The Oaks Mall in Thousand Oaks multiple times, but riding it backwards, or, backwards as our current society would have it deemed. I had a friend with me that helped me monitor the reactions of eight different experiment groups and got various reactions where people confronted me about my lack of normality. This contradicted my hypothesis and proved it wrong, which was, “Even if I stand the wrong way in the elevator and go against the social norm, people will go about their business and not react outwardly.”…

Then, a few weeks later, after I got home from softball practice, there was a strange but familiar looking truck parked beside moms car. After getting a shower and fixing myself something to eat I noticed mom come out of her room. Normally when she would come out of her room she would leave her door open, but not this time. I knew that something was up, and I asked her who was there. She whispered and said that his name was Scott. Come to find out that it was the guy who helped us move into the apartment. Talk about an awkward situation. This was my mom, and she wasn't supposed to have someone staying over at the house,…
