Flight School Application Statement
Why I have chosen aviation as my career.
Ever since I went for a ride in my friends Dad’s Zenith Skyjeep I have had a passion for flying. I was thrown back by the whole atmosphere of the flight. Soon after this I decided to make sure it wasn’t a one off. I went for a trial flight with Quantum Aviation in Whangarei. This was undoubtedly enough, I was hooked.
The start of this year presented itself with two options. I had to decide between having a gap year or getting stuck into my studies. As I knew I wanted to follow the aviation career pathway and I know the effort and commitment which must be applied in order to succeed I chose to save up all I could and have a gap year down here in Dunedin. My plan was to have a year off then reside back to Northland and start my dream of becoming a pilot with Quantum Aviation in Whangarei. These plans soon changed after I discovered Mainland Aviation Dunedin. After further researching the College I decided this was where I wanted to study. Diploma in Aviation Science was the Qualification I was going to pursue.
Driving has always been a big passion of mine but I have always been held back by the regulations of the road and the excessive cost of track racing. I love the sense of being in control of modern technology and when I took over the plane for the first time on my test flight I had a grin from ear to ear. It was like nothing I had ever experienced before and from this point on I knew this was the career for me. After this event driving just wasn’t the same, it just didn’t compare to what I had experienced that day in the Cessna 152. After weighing up the different options for me to access my goal of becoming a pilot I decided to go for the commercial process. The armed forces just didn’t seem right for me; although the costs were a lot lower I just couldn’t justify the return of service. I would not want to be tied down for such a long period of time. I see myself as much more of a

As many people believe, you can't succeed in aviation unless you have a strong passion for it. I have always loved to fly, I can't think of one time where I have not been excited to board an airliner, even for a 12 hour flight returning from a perfect vacation in Alaska! Everything about flying appeals to my senses; the pressure sensation on my back as the aircraft barrels down the runway and lifts off, the jet engine spooling noises during takeoff, and even the distinctive jet fuel scent that fills the cabin when the turbofans are being started are just a few examples. I also love everything about an aircraft itself; the appearance, and instruments, controls and systems that successfully drive the aircraft increase my interest in airliners. All of these aspects about aviation further strengthen my desire to become a pilot. When watching aviation videos online, the sounds of the flight deck together with the sounds of the engines while the pilot lands the aircraft perfectly all combine together into one strong feeling of awe that takes over my mind. I really love everything about flying and airliners, and want to operate them for my…

I joined the U.S Army in 2006 as a 92F (petroleum supply specialist) at the age of 18. I went on to be deployed 2 times to Iraq. While in Iraq, I got cross trained and had a new MOS or job title. After the training, I was put into a security detachment. I got out of the military October 2010. One thing I look back on and think about that I should have taken a risk on and tried was going SF (Special Forces). Many of my friends in my unit tried out for SF while I was in. Some failed and some passed and went on to have good careers in SF.…

My most prized possession is my mental stability and ethical background that I have acquired from my southern upbringing. Growing up in a rural community in the south and being reared by elderly parents allowed my seeds of character and respect to be nurtured by an entire village of people who saw my potential and wanted to see me succeed and thus pushed and prayed for my wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. As a child, series of unique experiences of being able to develop intimate and loving relationships with almost everyone in my community made me appreciate the influence of everyone on my life. It was not long before I realized that no matter how old or young, rich or poor, or educated a person was, everyone contributed to humanity’s niche…

The plane lurched forward and I edged it towards the runway. It’s wheels began to roll quicker and quicker as I pushed the throttle further away from me. I came close to the edge of the runway and pulled the control wheel backwards in towards my stomach, the plane shifted upwards, it’s nose pointed towards the sky and we began to fly. My stomach began to somersault as we gained altitude. I had never grown accustomed to the feeling of liftoff…

I can remember all the way back to when I was a young child in elementary. I didn’t think much about the kids around me or how they lived and I can honestly say that very few kids stick out from those years maybe because it seemed to me at the time that we were all pretty much the same except for our physical appearances. What I can remember about the kids in junior high school was the need to fit in and be liked at all costs. Making fashion statements were much more important than answering the question about the meaning of life. High school though became a stepping stone into the complex and dynamic reality of the world around me that I had never investigated nor even identified. Beginning with my freshman year I encountered many more students than I ever thought I would. I started to notice quite quickly that the school population was extremely diverse and segmented. Groups were everywhere; jocks, nerds, gothic kids, trouble makers, and of course the ever present popular kids. This was the first time I could see with my own eyes the fact that we were actually quite different from each other. Kids that I had befriended in junior high slowing began to change and pull away from me for reasons that were not understandable to me at the time. In actuality, not only were they going through changes but I was going through them as well. My taste in clothes, music, sports, and my views on certain topics began to expand and diversify. Yet I started to realize that in doing so meant leaving my old friends behind and meeting new ones. My family had always been a cornerstone in my life who established my belief system as far as religion and values and therefore the perspective on the young life I had led up until that point. That upbringing enabled me to be able to compare and contrast the beliefs and ideas of others with my own and so the journey into the world of high school led me to come face to face with that very opportunity. One example which stands out in my mind…

From my freshman year when I took my college visit I grasped the knowledge and motivation to accomplish my goal of being a professional in the medical field; I was so open to being at any college as long as I earned my education. My mom pushed me to get good grades. Now I understand why. I struggled my freshman year in high school, my grades and motivation weren’t how they were when I first entered. Now as a senior, I will finish my second semester of college while completing all four years of high school, and playing basketball all four years. I am the second oldest of five siblings. I am the second oldest and encourage my younger siblings to get good grades and to focus on sports and find themselves, and understand who they are, as I did…

In 1979, at the age of 19 years old and just returning to the United States from Verona, Italy now stationed at Fort Bragg North Carolina. I was assigned to the 407th S&S battalion as a parachute rigger in the heavy drop section. The Air Drop (AD) section is responsible for the Army’s heavy equipment deployments i.e. Tanks, supply’s, ammunition, and trucks. Returning from an overseas duty station afforded me luxuries that my fellow stateside solders did not receive items such as top of the line home stereo units, names like Sansui, Sony, Pioneer, and Marantz. I purchased a stereo unit costing over $3300.00 which it took me three years to pay for. I brought a Sansui receiver, Kenwood turntable, Akai reel to reel and large floor standing speakers capable of…

    The Golden Age Of Flying

    • 1541 Words

It is easy for a modern day flyer to look back at photos of people flying in the 50’s and 60’s and to wish that flying were the same today. Unlike pictures of people flying today, which illustrate casually dressed, grumpy passengers, packed into a stark-white cabin, pictures from 60 years ago illustrate formally dressed, smiling passengers, eating steak and lobster off of fine china. The presumably superior flying experience throughout the 50’s and 60’s is commonly referred to as the “Golden Age of Flying.” The reality though is that flying during the golden age wasn’t as “golden” as pictures portray it, and therefore, contrary to popular belief, flying today is actually better than it used to be.…

Probably this is the most challenging question in the near future of my life. But in my opinion finishing University with a degree as good as possible will be the best start you can have. Also I think it is very important to have the best basis you can reach for your future life and what would be better than an outstanding result at University. Furthermore I would probably try to finish graduate classes. Right after this big step there will be several ways possible. I haven’t decided yet, what kind of way would be the best to choose? But my time as a student will go on for at least 3-4 years if everything works exactly like I imagined it. So there are many days left to make my final decision. One way could be, that I will try to introduce myself to several companies, such as Boeing, Airbus, Sikorsky, Lockheed Martin or Cassidian. One of my dreams is to become an engineer in the military aircraft sector. This whole part of the aerospace industry includes a lot of challenging topics, of which every single one is totally interesting to me. But in my case I would prefer to become an engineer in developing several new parts in the cockpit, including the HUD (Head-up display) and improvements in controlling the whole Jet (Flight Control System). After all the FCS is probably the most important part of an airplane, because you will not be able to fly a modern Fighter without any sort of electronically support. Another reasonable way would be getting the chance to become a pilot. It was always a dream of me to join the military and to help protecting our country from whatever there will be. Unfortunately is it not that easy to become a pilot of the German forces and the Luftwaffe (Air Force) is not as big as in the United States. For that reason I have to think about it twice and maybe there is the possibility to join some other forces under special circumstances. It is never easy to reach your goals especially when they are very…

I remember back to when I was a child, in which I would constantly dream of flight and its characteristics of freedom and serenity. Throughout my younger years I collected miniature model airplanes of metal and plastic, longing to be the pilot of the real machine; this obsession continued until the day my grandfather introduced me to radio controlled flight. My grandfather and I visited his model airplane flying field where he effortlessly controlled a piece of machinery which my glowing 11 year old eyes watched in pure awe. The soothing whir of the propeller left me with a calm sensation and a peace that settled throughout my motionless body. Ever since then, I have endlessly been pursuing and achieving this same momentary emotion, as no other sensation has ever been as gratifying to me.…
