Another day, another run. Far from being dull, though, Senri saw it as yet another opportunity to push herself. So it was that she found herself out by Central Park turning the streets into her playground, her medical supplies strapped to her legs as usual. A good thing, too, because from the sound of that explosion, she was going to need them! Curiosity and concern both piqued, she made a beeline for its source, helped along by the smoke already trailing into the sky. Gathering the wind about herself, she kicked in a burst of speed, feet barely touching the ground. As an afterthought, she fumbled out the polarized ski goggles that served to conceal her identity, slipping them over her head with a wince as the already fastened straps pull at her hair. She tugs her hood up just in time to round a corner... and skid to a stop at the scene unfolding before her. "All this only a few blocks away. What are the odds...?" In…

Told from a third person’s perspective “How to Tell a True War Story” seems to focus on the death of a friend and good times they had together during the Vietnam War. It begins with an absolute statement that the story is true then a letter is sent to a relative of the deceased that receives no reply. It goes on to tell us the story of war and all the complexities it holds. The author points out numerous times that real war stories have no moral or life lesson like those in novels or movies even though we’d like them to. The narrator seems to be reminiscing throughout the story while still trying to make the point that war stories are almost never what you expect or even want to hear.…

My whole symbol revolves around an American flag because I am American. On stripes area of the flag I put the sports that I play every year, which are basketball, football, baseball, and track. If you look inside the track symbol you will see the number 400 because I run 400’s in track. The basketball is the biggest and in the middle because it is my favorite sport to play. If you follow the sports counter clock wise around the flag you will find the order of my favorite sports. I like basketball because you get to run a lot and it could get physical. I like football because you get to tackle kids without getting in trouble. The reason I do track is to travel to towns with your friends and to get the feeling of winning. I enjoy playing baseball…

Upon finishing my first cup of coffee, my son pulls in the driveway and enters the house with the words, "MOM I NEED TO TELL YOU SOMETHING." With heart wrenching thoughts, I sat back in my chair to prepare myself. Never once thinking of the rumors, which had orders coming to activate and deploy the 39TH Infantry Brigade, of the Arkansas National guard, for a 2ND tour of duty in Iraq. I guess I had just blocked this out especially since; My American Soldier's enlisted time would be up October 1, 2008. As he took a deep breath, I could not believe my ears. He said, "We've received Title 10 orders (Federal Activation & Deployment) as of October 1, 2008, and before you say anything I've re-enlisted for another 6-year term." Upon these words, I totally fell apart and I mean literally. The tears flowed with no…

Imagine living in a place where citizens with light skin had control of citizens with dark skin. I believe that my flag in my heart means courage, because all of our soldiers had to have courage and bravery to stay alive, safe and self-assured from others. Deep in my heart, I believe that somewhere in the world, there is a person that needs our help. For all the dignity and self-esteem our heroes have, that that person and citizens around the world will get our help.…

The short story that will be discussed, evaluated, and analyzed in this paper is a very emotionally and morally challenging short story to read. Michael Meyer, author of the college text The Compact Bedford Introduction to Literature, states that the author of How to Tell a True War Story, Tim O’Brien, “was drafted into the Vietnam War and received a Purple Heart” (472). His experiences from the Vietnam War have stayed with him, and he writes about them in this short story. The purpose of this literary analysis is to critically analyze this short story by explaining O’Brien’s writing techniques, by discussing his intended message and how it is displayed, by providing my own reaction, and by proposing why this story has withstood the test of time and is worthy of inclusion in an anthology.…
