Firefighter Narrative
The first tone came across my radio at approximately 6:28pm. I turn my radio up and listen closely, the dispatcher comes on, “First tone for Acton Fire respond mutual aid to Milton Mills NH on Appleby road for a structure fire.” I immediately grab my phone, keys, and radio and race outside to my truck. The excitement and nervousness runs through me, knowing that my first call as a volunteer firefighter was for a structure fire.

After what felt like forever I finally turn onto Appleby road. As soon as I traveled up the road

As I make my way toward them they are working on putting ladders up to the roof, and a crew of three from my department were inside fighting the fire. As I get closer I spot Chief Langley. I remind him that I am a junior due to limitations junior firefighters have; such as, going inside a house that is deemed unsafe without SCBA (self contained breathing apparatus), directing traffic, going on a roof, etc. he acknowledges and sends me with Captain Lambert to do a walk around.

We walk around the building identifying things that have been done, observe fire behavior, and the incident as a whole. In this case the fire started in the basement. He told me all kinds of information on firefighting that normally people wouldn’t know unless that had that kind of connection with the fire department, or they did extra research. This has made my life and actions dealing with fire more intelligent. It even made the work I do easier. What work do I do? I followed in my father’s footsteps and became a firefighter.…

They are on call at all hours. They get pulled out of their warm, safe beds in the middle of the night to respond to fires, crashes, floods and other emergencies. They venture out in all kinds of weather, blizzards, torrential downpours, unbearable heat. They save people lives in many cases, the lives of people who are not exactly innocent victims, whose foolishness puts their own and others lives in danger. They are quite simply heroes, typically unassuming regular folks, many of whom are not paid a cent for their sacrifices. Firefighters.…

On February 8th, 2013 I visited fire station #6 located in Costa Mesa, California. I called the station prior to my visit and spoke with a fire fighter named Story. He said it would be alright to stop by around two o’clock. Upon arrival I came up with ten questions to ask him that I thought would provide me with a better understanding of what it takes to be a fire fighter. During my visit to the fire station I wanted to identify what it takes to be a firefighter, the day to day operations at the fire station, and see the type of equipment they use on fires and medical calls. When I arrived Mr. Story gave me a tour of the station, and explained that his station was an EMT station only, meaning that if their station went on a call they would have to also call a paramedic unit if it was needed. We sat down for 30 minutes and went over the questions I prepared and talked about his journey to become a fire fighter.…

They came up with a way to do so by creating a division within the fire department itself, fire departments called it, fire prevention bureau. The division’s job is a very important one should have high priority in the fire departments. The bureau is a division easily overlooked by citizens, city council, township trustees, and others. The division plays a large role in the community by providing fire safety education to all of the citizens that live and or work within the community that has a fire prevention bureau.…
