This project made groundbreaking revelations; this included using engineering techniques which had not been used in the type of scale to their extent. Two types of engineering practices were the use of caissons for the foundation and a suspension bridge system, both of which had been limited in use before the Brooklyn Bridge. The way in which Roebling approached the Brooklyn Bridge was a critical component of the management project; he had a vision in mind before being granted the project and executed the project according to his elaborate plan. Although the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge was incredibly successful, the approach taken had left the very little room for error for the designers. Much of the success lies in the fact that the Roeblings had gotten most of the characterization correct. However, without any contingencies, the plan lacked much flexibility to adjust to any major setbacks to the project.…

At the same time, the framework of PESTLE analysis will be a feature. The 6 factors were classified as follows: detail on the important political factors of the region (Manhattan and Brooklyn) during the time of the bridge's construction and any form of corruption of that time). Also a look into the society's aspects coupled with the economic factors (the immigration surge, the East River linkage by the bridge of two cities). The technical aspects such as the design, technology deployed and engineering behind the choice of suspension and material chosen during the 14 challenging years of construction. The legislation and other legal matters of that time regarding the labour that was employed coupled with the health and safety of the project. Lastly, the environmental factors that had to be incorporated will be discussed below. This paper will therefore follow the process of finding the issues of that time period, and analysing their level of importance. It will also elaborate on the implications that these issues had on the external environment and the structure which was to be built (PESTLE Analysis, 2013).…

Construction on the bridge began in fall of 1869 and was completed May 1883, taking the bridge about fourteen years to build. Despite having as talented a chief engineer as Washington Roebling who provided very detailed plans for workers to follow, “the bridge had taken two and one half times as long as the five years John Roebling had predicted”. (1, pg. 104) This is in part due to some of the unforeseen problems with caissons, the underwater foundation Washington Roebling had decided to build the bridge upon, which at the time had been “used for small bridges in Europe, but the ones for the Brooklyn Bridge had to be much bigger.” (3, pg. 16) On the other hand, some unexpected caisson problems were dealt with successfully, thereby, avoiding additional delays.…

Admit it though we are engineering students we are not so familiar of the issues about how bridges collapse in just one glimpse. The first failure of a bridge happened August 29 by the year 1907, The Bridge was in Quebec and it killed 86 people. This is one of the most remarkable catastrophes in the field of Civil Engineering. Through this tragedy, aren’t the engineers and the people involved in construction never learned their lessons? And still record of failure of bridges still soar and one of the latest failures of a bridge was the India Bridge killing more than 45 people last December 24, 2009.…

Bangladesh as a developing nation should seriously move to act as a participant in the global economic and financial network for implementation of infrastructure projects. We should increase our focus on long-run development projects where economic returns are higher than commercial returns (such as river training, land acquisition, land administration and resettlement) and commercial financiers may finance commercially viable activities. Padma Bridge is a continuation of the commitment towards such long-run focus associating our development partners. The concept is in a country like Bangladesh, where there is an acute shortage of power and other infrastructural facilities, ensuring transparency, execution support capability and corporate governance can do miracles, in terms of drawing investors focus and ensuring successful implementation of projects. Donor agencies or development partners can also focus on capacity building among civil bureaucracy, for improving their understanding about the project economics and execution with precision. The burning question igniting confusion, consideration or consolidation of various feelings and thoughts is yet to be resolved. Multi-facet variables as monetary, fiscal or even sovereignty or self-esteem of the country are scrutinized to identify the appropriate option.…

The communication system in Bangladesh is quite unenviable. Because of a large number of rivers crisscrossing it, building roads and highways, railways and bridges in all its parts has not been feasible. This is why, traditional country boats still serve as the most useful means of transport and communication. Besides, the economic condition of our country also does not allow mass mechanization of transport.…

    Golden Gate Bridge History

The First proposal for the Golden Gate Bridge came from James Wilkins, who at the time was an engineering student. The cost of James Wilkins Bridge was unrealistic at the time which was 100million dollars, but none the less it set the bar for other bridge engineers to try to work out a cheaper solution. During this time a young Joseph Strauss had graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Business and Economics. Joseph was an avid student at his school and was the class president and poet for his class. Joseph’s interests with engineering and bridge design some might say happened by chance, in that, one day Joseph once tried out for his school’s football team but got injured and taken to the infirmary. During his stay, he gazed outside the window at the Cincinnati-Covington Bridge. Little did anyone know, Joseph was on his way to becoming a leader in his society and a hero amongst most. Joseph spent some time working at an office for an engineering firm which designed bridges, and after a preposition to his firm was rejected, he though to start his own firm and take his idea with him. Joseph went on to create the Strauss Bascule bridge company of Chicago where he amped up the modern day bascule bridge (draw bridge) with his designs and ideas.…

The Padma Bridge is a very important scheme of Bangladesh for its development. It will not only bring about infrastructural development but also enhance economic and social welfare of the people of the connected areas. It will save many lives for it will replace the unsafe ferry journeys. However, there had remained some criticalities regarding its financing, because one of the donor financers have charged the padma bridge scheme of corruption, from bribing of high officials by a Canadian Construction consultancy company. For this, many of the other financers are backing, and GoB has to think of alternative ways, each of which comes with their own cost. The research aims at performing a cost benefit analysis of all the financing alternatives, and derives a conclusion on the basis of sufficient analysis. The research is a qualitative one, and is based primarily on secondary data source. Data analysis is done by literature rivews, and consulting supporting materials.…
