Film Techniques Used In Edward Scissorhands
In the move Edward Scissorhands, there is a man that was created by an inventor and has scissors as hands. He is an invention with a heart, and actual body parts. He would wear a black suit and have black hair. He is very pale with scratch marks on his face. He and his father lived in a mansion away from the community. The character would live on the top floor of the mansion and have a bed with pictures and newspaper articles on the wall. He was taken down to the neighborhood by a lady selling cosmetics and he was amazed by the world. Edward is the man that is being described. In the movie Edward Scissorhands, Tim Burton’s fairy tale-like style is conveyed through his use of low key lighting and flashback.
One characteristic of Burton’s fantastical style is his use of front lighting. Front lighting causes the character to look innocent. It creates the character to seem good. It shows that they will not hurt anyone and is harmless. An example of that is when Peg went in the mansion and saw Edward and wanted to leave. It showed the whole mansion and then all of the houses in the town. In the very beginning, they showed Edward looking at the town through the window. First it would show his face by the window and them the houses during the night. This example implies that the director wanted us to see what Edward saw and how the town looked like from the mansion. This is similar to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when they showed the factory and the delivery trucks.
