Film Analysis: The Cold War
Cold War-“a condition of rivalry, mistrust, and often open hostility short of violence especially between power groups (such as labor and management).” The series that was watched was named “Cold War” a Jeremy Isaacs production. Turner Original Productions (CNN) released the series on television in 1998. This series was a documentary based on the period slightly before and until after the end of a period in history called The Cold War, from years 1945 to 1990’s spanning across the globe. This documentary proved the idea that the Cold War affected many regions and many aspects of people’s lives around the world. Such areas are Berlin, Korea, Cuba, Vietnam, China, and Eastern Europe. Berlin was split after WWII, a Democratic West and “Communist” East side. From the rising migration of people to the west, a wall was built to split Berlin physically. Families were split apart, and as people desperately tried to cross they were killed. Wars to fight communism were in Korea, Vietnam, and Cuba, these countries were being invaded/changed/tried to change to communism. Korean, Vietnamese, Cuban, and US lives were lost due to these wars. Korea was divided into North, which was communist influenced, and the South, which was democratic, influenced. At anytime, the world could be ended through a detonation of a bomb. The US prepared for these bombs being dropped with great fear. Everyone practiced drills, and bomb shelters were built. At times, people believed that civilization could end at any day or any time. As seen in the sixties in the US, people began to let their freak flag fly, and have fun. Life was precious and could be ended. “Cold War” showed that the Cold War changed the world and affected people in various ways. In the US, there was advancement in technology, increase in jobs, and an increase in consumer goods. In the Soviet Block and the communist friends had food shortages and decrease in availability in consumer goods. People’s governments and ways of life were changed.
