DEGREE THESIS Arcada Degree Programme: Identification number: Author: Title: Supervisor (Arcada): Commissioned by: Abstract: This research was designed to find out whether changes in consumer behaviour in recent years have had an effect on the sales of luxury branded accessories. This research is significant to luxury brands and in particular those selling accessories in the fashion industry. Its players range from storeowners to merchandisers and business executives. The aim of the research was to determine whether the perception of luxury has depreciated due to changes in consumer behaviour and whether luxury accessories have become more available on the market and whether this fact makes the brands less luxurious. Factors such as changes in communication, globalization, social networking, mass consumption, cultural homogenization, e-tail, celebrity branding and the recession of 2007 have had an effect on consumer behaviour. In order to find out the main changes of consumer behaviour the author has collected data from a wide range of literature e.g. academic sources and journals that represent the theory part of the research. According to the research done, interviews were conducted and compiled per oral and written form and sent out to luxury retailers, as part of the case study and its subsequent analysis. Finally, the author was able to compare and contrast results of the theory in parallel to the company cases in comparison with a report done on luxury spending habits published by American Express, as part of the discussion of this research.     1. What are the defining characteristics of the luxury goods industry? What is the industry like? Economics define a luxury good as one for which demand increase as income increase. Luxury goods are said to have high income elasticity of demand as people become wealthier, they will buy more and more of the luxury good. This also means, however, that should there be a decline in income its demand will drop. Unlike mediocre goods, they are related to price and high-income individuals. A luxury corporation may establish its image via pricing, exclusivity, limited availability, quality and location. High pricing gives the product its prestigious nature, and implies high quality. Luxury brands in general, relied on creative designs, high quality, and brand reputation to attract customers and build brand loyalty. The market for luxury goods was divided into three main categories: haute-couture, traditional luxury, and the growing submarket “accessible luxury”. At the apex of the market was haute couture with it very high-end “custom” product offering that caters to the extremely wealthy. Luxury goods manufacturers believed diffusion brand’s lower profit margins were offset by the opportunity for increased sales volume and the growing size of the accessible luxury market and protected margins on such products by sourcing production to low-wage countries. The luxury goods industry is under drastic change and at different levels. This has an impact on Coach's business because they have two different types of stores. On one hand they have factory stores who sell at a discounted price and on the other hand they have full-priced stores or flagship stores which cater to higher end consumers.     Patriarchy is “the systematic organization of male supremacy” or the social system organized around gender difference (55). The system of patriarchy has created a set of Eurocentric masculinist epistemological conditions for today, because of this it creates social normalities which determines how people should present their gender and how they should fit into society. Society has made it acceptable to limit gender and create a stratification system to rank statuses unequally (65). Social constructions of hetero-patriarchy that have been formed expect women “to be modest and virtuous, to look beautiful, and, simultaneously to lure men” they hurl these ideas at us through propaganda and media (150). As a woman, I’m supposed to be heterosexual, beautiful, feminine and easily oppressed, we’re expected to fit in a cis female binary and do our gender correctly. Should we choose to break our binary we are sometimes punished for it “through name calling, discrimination, hate and outright violence” (155). Society tries to reject ideas that don’t fit within the specific stratification, I happen to not fit into the typical social stratification. I normally present myself as a cis female, however I’m not heterosexual. Being homosexual is an inequality within whiteness, and it’s not the preferred sexuality according to social constructions.…
