Faulty Worldview
Going back to the treatment discussion, treatments for our sufferers follow from the idea that our sufferers have a faulty worldview, and that as such, to treat our sufferers what needs to be done is to fix this worldview. To do this, we need to bring their worldview back in line with a normal one. The problem for our case is that neither disorder appears treatable at our current time. Changing their worldview seems to be too great a challenge. The literature suggests that there are currently three preferred treatments. The first is medicative. Really, we don’t know how our minds will react to certain medications, and so it doesn’t follow that these medicative solutions will necessarily be successful, as there will most likely be cases where the medicine is ineffective for the treatment. The medicative treatment then, fails as it does not necessitate us helping the sufferer. The second and third treatments appear to me as potentially more fruitful options, as they involve a more direct approach to changing our sufferers’ worldviews. Beginning with the second, mentalization refers to a treatment in which a caregiver help the sufferer redefine how it is that they should emotionally relate to certain aspects of the world . The hope then is that if we can teach someone how they should react emotionally to certain stimuli, we can rehabilitate them so as to make their actions and beliefs more in line with what we would consider normal. So, if our sufferers felt negatively towards the law, mentalization would try and change our sufferers’ feelings towards the law, so as to promote a normal relationship with the law.
