Chapter 2 - Your Trusted Friends

The concepts of conformity and organizational homogenization, while repugnant in a democratic society, can actually aid big businesses and more specifically franchises in promoting quality assurance and brand loyalty. Large corporations, such as McDonald's, are able to maintain stability and control by removing any factors that may create unfamiliarity for their customers.

The goal of McDonald’s is to create a fast food empire founded on conformity to ensure a common experience. For example, everything from the menu, to the restaurant facade, to the golden arch flag waving proudly beside our American flag, demonstrates their efforts to create a sense of comfort through familiarity. McDonald’s target market expects the same service, experience, and product whenever they enter a franchise location. Large corporations recognize the power of consistency and the importance of conformity within their ranks. When Ray Kroc says, “We have found out [...] that we cannot trust some people who are nonconformists. [...] The organization cannot trust the individual; the individual must trust the organization”, Kroc was trying to emphasize the importance of conformity and need for trust in the organization’s goals. Kroc had created a successful formula and needed his employees to share his vision.

The American fast food industry has made a significant impression on our social and economic landscape. The concept of “flipping burgers” has become synonymous with entry level employment for teens and other unskilled laborers. The industry employs hundreds of thousands of people at all levels. The industry also occupies a prominent place in our popular culture. From commercials on television, to the ads on the side of the bus, to the billboard on the side of highway 95, the fast food industry has made itself a visible force in the American economy and pop culture.     McDonalds is a corporation that has great success because of good strategy and planning. In the next five years, McDonalds needs to keep up with the changes of the consumer and social trends that bring an impact to the bottom line. As noticed, recently McDonalds has changed its image to appeal to a greater group of customers. A plan that the corporation can integrate is to visualize the future.     After longstanding growth within the fast food industry, McDonald's began to experience a decline in their annual earnings in the late 90's. Prior to the decline, McDonald's was a segment leader within the fast food industry and was widely recognized for its outstanding service and quality. Once known as the benchmark company by industry insiders, McDonald's began to lose sight of their strategic vision, which, was to provide the "world’s best quick service restaurant experience". In order to improve their financial performance and once again satisfy their customer base, McDonald's chose not to emulate their competitors. Instead, they chose to use their existing resources and capabilities to identify emerging asymmetries during the turnaround around between 2003 and 2007. By using a combination of their current infrastructure, human capital, marketing capabilities and new product introductions, the management team was once again able to pursue market opportunities that built on these leveraged capabilities. One of the first resources used to initiate their turnaround was the infrastructure of their current restaurant base. After realizing that rapid franchise growth was providing stagnant returns and substandard performance as well as jeopardizing their customer’s restaurant experience due to poor food quality and service, the company decided to focus on generating sales from its existing outlets and revamping the outdated look of their older restaurants. Although not their official founder, Ray Kroc developed and exploded this fast-food restaurant into what it is today. Maurice and Richard McDonald started a Bar-B-Q restaurant in San Bernardino, the United States in 1940(“McDonald’s History”). In 1948, they introduced the “Speedee Service System” and the CEO Ray Kroc established the McDonald’s System Inc. in Illinois in 1955.
