Falling In Love With The Philippines I have been to other places, over the Philippines, across the continent, and even to the other side of the globe. I fell in love with foreign countries and not of my own. But during my sembreak vacation, where I got the chance to see Northern Philippines, I fell in love with Ilocos. I fell in love with my own country. To tell you the truth, I wasn’t really excited about going to Ilocos for several reasons. One, I believed that there was some place better we could go to, like maybe out of the country. Second, it was the first time that we travelled without my brother, and to me, it felt wrong. And third, I had absolutely no idea about what to see and what to do in Ilocos. And so I went to Ilocos without any expectations and just opening my eyes and heart to whatever it is I would see and find there. And I found myself in love the moment I set foot in the airport. I fell in love with the people! Ilocanos were very kind, very hospitable, and very accommodating. There are smiling faces everywhere you go whether it be at the hotel, malls and random tricycle drivers. Ilocanos would always know when you are a tourist and it seemed like they’re very used to dealing with people, even those who drive the kalesa. They seemed very proud of their province and their heritage and I understood why. The people were just the beginning. The famous sights and landmarks of Ilocos were what made me jaw drop of awe. I had two days to see these places. The first one I got to see was the Cape Burador Lighthouse. It was a lighthouse constructed upon a very high mountain. When I got down of the car, the first thing I admired was the view. It was breath-taking! With the vast blue ocean down below with rocky structures and the green color of the trees and surroundings, it was really beautiful. Then, I knew that we had to climb a series of steps

Eventually the day came, I was getting ready to come to the U.S.A but I didn't wanted to leave. My plane ticket and all the other things were already paid for so there was no going back. It was so hard saying goodbye to my family as well to my country, but even if I cried, I couldn't do anything about it. Ones I was in the sky looking down to my country, crying like a little baby, I fall more in love with it, because from up top I could see my whole country. When I was…

I saw the prestigious, resort-filled side of the country, as well as the impoverished, third world side of the country. It was incredible. For the first time ever, I was introduced to true poverty, witchcraft and witch doctors, authentic Latin American food, an incomprehensible language barrier, new clothing standards, vulnerable and wholehearted Christian worship, and Spanish music. The entire trip helped cultivate and foster my previous knowledge and I am so thankful for that opportunity that was made available for…

The great and recurrent question about travelling is, is it worth getting there? I am always ready to visit a new place, always excited to find more things about an unfamiliar area. That is why, when we were informed that we’re going to have an educational trip at Cagayan de Oro, also known as the City of Golden Friendship, I was delighted. I love the road. It may be a little tough on my part because I easily miss my family, but it has been and will remain a great thrill and challenge to me. Though I don’t really get the chance to travel a lot, I always try to enjoy every chance I have. This won’t be my first travel away from Visayas but this will be my first trip to Mindanao. Journeys begin where we think they do. As for me, it all started on that same shuttle on the way to Ormoc, where the 80’s songs on the radio hypnotized me during the travel. All I was thinking the moment the shuttle started its engine was that the following split seconds will be the start of the best split seconds of my life. This is going to be one of my firsts, so, I’m making the most out of it. As we stepped our first foot in Cagayan, it was a whole new place, a whole new language and a whole lot of new faces surrounding me. It was like I was a stranger in a new-found place. Just so you all know I’m having a fieldtrip here! People were staring at us maybe wondering why we’re in a very large group at the very morning. During the trip, we visited different plants and companies located at the area of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan. Some of them are the Asia Brewery Corporation, Zest-O Corporation, Philippine Sinter Corporation, Del Monte Credit Cooperative, Mabuhay Vinyl Corporation, Maria Cristina Nature’s Park, Barter Trade, and Del Monte Canning Factory.…

I went to Italy for a few weeks and I would have spent an entire lifetime if I could have. The first place that I went in Italy was a small town called Portofino. It overlooks the Mediterranean Sea and is surrounded with Italian villas on the tops of mountains. There are huge vineyards filled with grapes and are also surrounded by the sea. Portofino is known for it harbor containing fish and other aquatic life. Also, many people own boats along the seaside and take them to visit other towns.…

    A Hidden Beauty

The City of Iligan, a city where most of my childhood summer is spent. We usually called it the city of waterfalls, a city where you can see the beauty of a nature in every spot of the town. Almost three hundred kilometers from the City of Butuan where my hometown is, average of seven hours travel, and two hours trip from Cagayan de Oro. Iligan is a place where I can see a city that is neighbored by a green and foggy mountains. Iligan is known of its waterfalls especially, Maria Cristina falls. But for me, the only falls that makes my heart melt of its beauty is Tinago falls. Tinago is a Filipino term meaning "hidden", the falls being hidden in a deep ravine. Trekking to the falls requires approximately five hundred descending steps called the winding staircase. The falls is high, its very cold waters cascading beautifully into a deep and calm basin-like pool which appears like a green-colored lagoon. Under the falls is a small cave where people can enter and listen to the rumbling waters. I liked where it is, down a mountain top. I love the stair made ladder going down and up. I love the cool spring water falls from above. The rainbow site you will see as you go under the falls. You can't stop smiling even with the tiring experience of climbing down and forth the hill. Sweet remembrance as you recall it. From the top of the falls you can hear the cry of the forest as the waters blaze your sight where the force of nature roughly falls down into the green deep lagoon. The rough waters slowly calms down and brings a sweet singing of music by the…

“They seemed faded plants sown and reared in darkness, having flowers without perfume and fruits without the sap”, Jose Rizal said in his letter “To the Young Women of Malolos” that the women were very passive to what the church teaches them but he had been proven wrong when the news of what had happened in Malolos reached him. In his letter, Rizal praised and honored the twenty brave women of the town for their victorious battle for their just demand to education and their battle to stop slavery to the friars. He also emphasized the obligations and roles of the Filipino mothers to their children; he compared the Filipino women to the Spartan women as role model. Rizal concluded his letter by encouraging the Filipino women to "Let us, therefore, reflect; let us consider our situation and see how we stand…. May your desire to educate yourself be crowned with success”.…

Then after that finally, we were already at Hundred Islands. We first rode on a big motorboat and I saw so many big and small islands that were full of trees. Maybe it took an hour until we got to Romulo Island. I already knew how to float in water. We got so much fun. But it’s not yet the end of our adventure because after two days, we’ve been in Manaoag for thanksgiving and went to Baguio after that. So that was so memorable for me because the places that I did not expect to go into it was where we went through.…
