Fairy Tale and Rumpelstiltskin
A young woman wants to marry the King, but is told that first she must spin straw into gold or die. A funny trickster by the name of Rumpelstiltskin agrees to do it, only if she promises her first born child. He does, and she marries the King. When she gives birth to a child, Rumpelstiltskin comes back and demands the child for payment. Since he loves to play games, he says that the Queen may keep the child, if she can guess his name in three days. He comes back three times to ask her what his name is. In the meantime the King inadvertently discovers the man in the woods who is saying his name. The King rushes home to tell the Queen. When Rumpelstiltskin returns the third time, she says his name and he disappears forever.
Themes: Power and Greed

1. Power:

The story of Rumpelstiltskin opens with a conversation between a poor miller and a king. The miller wants to impress the king, and appear more powerful in the king's eyes. He boasts, "I have a daughter who can spin straw into gold." The king, who understands the link between wealth and power, invites the daughter to the castle to put this skill to the test.

The first two nights, the king demonstrates ultimate power over the girl when he threatens to kill her if she fails to spin all the straw in the rooms into gold. On the third night, he informs her that if she again succeeds in spinning the straw to gold, she shall become his wife. He does not ask her opinion; she has no power to refuse his decision.

2. Greed:

The king's greed for more gold keeps the miller's daughter in the castle for three nights under threat of death. When he takes her as a wife, he thinks to himself, "Even if she is only a miller's daughter, I will not find a richer wife in all the world."

The little man who comes to the girl's aid each night and spins the straw into gold is very greedy. He takes no pity on the girl and her plight, but asks each time what she will give him if he helps her. He takes the only two

“My name is mine to know, and for you to guess,” the little man said. “I will spin this straw into gold for you, if you give me all your children.” Charlie considered that for a moment and then reluctantly agreed. He seemed to glow a little brighter from that, obviously very happy with their, or in this case his, deal. The little man walked over to the spinning wheel and turned to the straw.…

Gilitrutt may be slightly more satisfying than Rumpelstiltskin, but only slightly. The reader gets the satisfaction of seeing the farmer make his wife squirm by withholding vital information until the very last moment, then leaving her to her fate. The Farmer's wife does reform herself and it can be assumed that the husband and wife probably had a better relationship than the Miller’s Daughter and her King that threatened to kill her. So, did they live “happily ever after?” Sort of, they are most likely happier than the king and queen in Rumpelstiltskin. And Gilitrutt does a better job of tying up loose ends and leaving fewer questions. However, the story still lacks catharsis. The troll is free to live out her life tricking and eating as many…

“All stories consist of a few common structural elements found universally in myths, fairy tales, dreams and movies” stated screenwriter Christopher Volger (“The Writers Journey”). The traditional hero quest plotline is seen anywhere from old Greek myths to the blockbuster films of today. All hero quests have the same set of steps; some are harder to define then others. The steps of the hero quest include; the call, the threshold, the descent, trials and ordeals, the abyss, transformation, atonement and finally the return. The call is the first step in a traditional hero quest. The Call invites the Initiate into the adventure (Thompson and Harris). Before the call the Initiate has no intention of being called to something bigger. The Initiate may feel that something is missing in life, and during the call the Initiate may refuse it; eventually to revoke that decision and go to the world of adventure (Thompson and Harris). The threshold is the point when the Initiate leaves the known to enter the unknown. It is the “jumping off point” between everyday life and adventure (Thompson and Harris). The Initiate may go unwillingly or willingly to adventure. This is also the step where the Initiate may inherit or find a mentor. The descent is not literally descending into something, but going deeper and deeper into the unknown (Thompson and Harris).…

She herself said that her husband is 'too full of the milk of human kindness' to murder on his own initiative, and that she would try to possess him with the evil spirits that she holds inside her and persuade him to murder the King. To make sure that she had sufficient evil in her nature to carry this plan through, and that goodness would not be able to interfere, she asked the evil spirits present to possess her fully and make her into a witch, and hide her actions from…

The once innocent moral tale used to teach little girls a lesson has developed into many convoluted adaptations that apply some of modern societies most problematic issues. Both the Perrault and Grimm version of Little Red Riding Hood both point out the consequences of straying of the path. While Perrault’s Little Red Riding Hood ends with the wolf having eaten the innocent little girl, Grimm’s Little Red Cap has a hero who swoops in to save her and grandma. The movie, Freeway (1996) directed by Matthew Bright, subverts qualities found in the fairytales and puts a modern twist on it. Vanessa Lutts, our new Little Red Riding Hood, strays of the path, saves herself, and is definitely not the innocent little girl that Grimm and Perrault imagined;…

Aslan further parallels Christ when he sacrifices his own life to save Edmund, creating the scenario of salvation similar to the Bible (Worsley, 152). In the bible, Jesus gives up his own life to pay for the sins of the world, so those who believe can have an eternal life with him in heaven. Aslan’s sacrifice pays the price for Edmund’s treachery and allows him to live. However, Aslan, much like Jesus, rises from the dead and brings his supporters who have frozen into stone statues by the White Witch back to life by breathing on them. John 20:22 says “And with that He breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit’” (NIV Bible), showing that Jesus too brings his followers back to a new life. In The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe,…

Throughout every generation, fairy tales have been told to children to be used as warnings or a good night story, but stories such as those has been changed throughout the years to adapt to child safe versions or perhaps a better understanding of the original writings. The Grimm Brother’s version, “Little Red Cap”, had some of the same variants and perspective story bits as the original writer Perrault’s version of the Little Red Riding Hood, with a slight twist of redemption and changing of the moral of the story. The Grimm Brother’s version shows the readers how they adapted the story in their perspective and how they evolve the story into today’s writings.…

Good afternoon, my name is Rumpelstiltskin. Get settled down, cause I’m about to tell you the story of the time someone finally guessed my name. I was just walking around the village when I heard terrible sobbing. So I go over there and see what’s up. I look through the window and see this girl crying in a room full of straw with a spinning wheel. I ask her what’s wrong and she explains to me that her father told the king that she could turn straw into gold. I told her I could do it, but I would need something in return. So she hands me her necklace and I start doing my magic. I work all night to get that room full of straw spun. I’m walking again and I hear more crying. You’ll never guess who was crying. Anyways, she offers me a ring to spin a room full of straw that was even larger than the last one. So I do it without complaining because I know she’ll run out of stuff to pay me with eventually. I’m walking around again and, big surprise, guess who’s crying. I go into the room and ask her what she’ll pay me. She says she had nothing else, so I tell her that I need her firstborn child. She agrees and I’m off to work again. All night again! How am I supposed to get any sleep? A year passes and the girl ends up getting pregnant. So when the baby is born I walk into the room and demand it. I never complained about the previous work because I knew the baby would be mine. She offered me all of the riches in the kingdom, but I wanted the baby. But I had pity for her, so I gave her 3 days to guess my name so she could keep her baby, but I doubt she would have guessed it. My only mistake was the night before her last try. I started dancing around and was shouting my name and I guess that one of her spies was nearby. The spy reported back to the queen and she acted stupid at first, but then she shot me down and guessed my name. I got pretty angry. I stomped my foot and it got stuck in the ground. And then I tried to tear it out of the ground and ended up ripping myself…
