Society can be twisted in a sort of way that produces a different kinds of individuals who think and feel differently that we do. “Fahrenheit 451” is a novel by Ray Bradbury is set in a different future than our own. Mildred who is the main character’s wife, is a perfect example of the effects of a cold controlling society on other people. Mildred is a self-centered, robotic, unfeeling person, and it’s by no fault of her own. Society has made Mildred self-centered. The society as Captain Beatty describes it, is dumbed down and it’s changing how people view things. Mildred is proof of this, in the novel mildred is faced with what would be an emotional situation where Montag burned a woman alive, this is how mildred replies ,”She is nothing to me; she shouldn’t of had books. It was her responsibility and i hate her. She’s got you going and next thing you know we’ll be out, no house on job, nothing.” Montag has went through what to most is a traumatizing experience, but she doesn’t care at all. All she cares about is living comfortably even at the expense of others.
