Eye Witness Power Summary
In David Gergens book, “Eye Witness Power: The Essence of Leadership” he covers 4 major presidents, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Regan, and Bill Clinton. In my opinion He did well communicating everything and made the book pretty interesting. I like how he covers each president and actually goes into a lot of details. I actually found that it was more interesting than I had initially thought. The detail in this book is incredible, it’s like a behind the scenes of each presidency. Gegren served as an insider between all four presidents covered. His view was unlike any other he had an up close view of the trials, tribulations, flaws, and strengths of these leaders. He got to see what decisions the presidents made and to see what leadership looked like. While the presidents were great at being leaders Gergen takes it to another level and just gets down into the nitty gritty. What is a great leader and what does it take to be one. He acknowledges that even the presidents he observed made mistakes. Gegren wanted to lay a foundation of what leadership looks like. It takes a lot to look at each president objectively and without biass.

There was a problem with President Reagan though, while spending some time in Hollywood he would try to always memorize his speeches or whatever he would read. He often would stay up late in order to commit whatever he read to memory. The people who wrote his speeches learned not to give the president to much to read just so he would not be tired in the mornings. I found this fact particularly interesting you don’t really picture a president doing such things. I always thought President Reagan was a good leader, he knew how to get things done and lead by example. While he had many flaws so does any president Geregen says that Raegan relied too much on staff for daily operations. Even so I think Ragan was an overall good
