Explain Why There Is Better To Push A Projectile Out Of A Barrel
Guns are a simple idea, and work all the better because of it. To put it simply, gasses push a projectile out of a barrel. The gun hasn’t changed much since it was created in china centuries ago. Other than looks it has kept the same principle elements, the primer, the propellant, and the projectile (Leghorn). A primer is a small explosive that occurs when the trigger is pulled to light the propellant. Despite what many people think, the propellant doesn’t explode, it burns. It burns very quickly, but even after the bullet leaves the barrel it still burns for a moment. If the propellant exploded, it would blow apart the gun. The projectile is what is shot from the gun, since the propellant does not explode instantly and instead burns, it helps the projectile accelerate down the barrel to much higher speeds (Woodford). Guns use grooves on the inside of their gun. This is called rifling. This is done to force the bullet to spin, when any object spins it creates a gyroscope (Woodford). Gyroscopes like to stay they way they are to keep stable, guns take advantage of this and force the bullets to spin while exiting the barrel to keep them as stable as possible. This is caused because of Newton’s Third Law of Motion, which is that all actions have an equal and opposite reaction. The propellant explodes and sent the bullet flying forward. Because of Newton’s law, the gun comes back with an equal momentum as the bullet has moving forward. So why does the gun not go through your arm? It is because, while the bullet has great momentum, it is because of its speed, since the gun is heavy and has its impact over the whole of the shoulder with the use of the stock; it means the momentum is spread out unlike the small point of the bullet
