Tommy Gun Research Paper
Do you like ‘Once upon a time’ stories, with knights in shining armor, or do you prefer a story full of twists? Well, today is your lucky day, if you answered the latter, because the Tommy gun is full of them. ‘Tommy’ is short for Thompson, an automatic submachine gun.While there were many other weapons available, the Thompson submachine gun was used due to its effectiveness, its simplicity, and accessibility.
The Thompson SMG was created by John T. Thompson in 1918. It was made for the soldiers during WWI with the idea of the perfect gun to clear trenches (Wilkinson 141). Even Mr.Thompson called the gun the “trench broom”. Unfortunately for the SMG, it never reached the battlefield until the end of the war. After this incident, Thompson was forced to change his tactics. Thompson advertised it as the anti-bandit gun, and quickly escalated its way to the police department and ironically to the hands of bandits such as “Al Capone” and “John Dillinger” (Thompson).

Even though there were more than just one variant that fire other calibers .45 ACP was the most common. The .45 ACP might seem harmless but when fired at a rate of 700 RPM it will change the odds. Since it’s a pistol round fired from a gun similar to a rifle the recoil is easily controllable, even when used in automatic fire. The gun consisted in 74 parts including drum magazine and other parts such as the stock, grip, and sight. This number was later reduced in the military versions such as the M1 or the M1A1 and could be even smaller depending on the RPM. Even though the amount of part could be considered large it was fairly simple to assemble and disassemble it. Basically the gun consisted of inserting the magazine, lock it in place, pull the actuator, and pull the trigger as simple as
