Explain Why I Chose Dentistry
One of the biggest challenges I have faced was moving to America from Pakistan. The transition was difficult; I left childhood memories, family, and close friends behind. However, this portion of my life had a strong influence on the impact I want to have on impoverished populations. Seeing a dentist in Pakistan is a privilege that most of the families couldn’t afford. In those 17 years, it was rare for my family and I to have our teeth professionally cleaned or have a regular dental checkup. Dental insurance did not exist, and everything had to be, and still is, paid for in advance prior to seeing the dentist. Consequently, the majority of the Pakistani population have unsanitary dental hygiene. This sparked my interest in pursuing dentistry as a profession where I can help provide dental care to underserved …show more content…
I had finally been given the opportunity to continue my higher education at an American institution. I knew that this was the chance I had been waiting for: the chance to study dentistry in a country where oral hygiene is incredibly important. However, there were several hurdles along the way I needed to overcome. Initially, I was completely unaware of how the American education system operated. My poor background in the English language made it even harder to overcome this obstacle. To add to this stress, my father was diagnosed with acute arthritis in his neck; a cervical spine fusion in C6 and C7 was pinching the nerve in his right arm, which was causing it to go numb. He wasn’t able to work and went through an extensive amount of painful physical therapy. The circumstances made it harder for me to focus on my dreams. Unfortunately, I had to work fulltime while I was still a fulltime student in college, which was detrimental to my grades. However, I worked even harder and by the time I was a junior in college, I was maintaining dean’s list as a full time student, while working

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” true words that was once said by Laozi, an ancient Chinese philosopher and writer. The decision of leaving my home country, Egypt, at the age of 11, and coming to the U.S. definitely marks the start of that one single step- education. I knew that coming to the U.S. was a great opportunity for me to get a better education and thus a better future in my career. Even though I was very happy and excited, it was also a very challenging step in my life. Coming only with my father and my brother while leaving my mother and my two sisters back in Egypt was very difficult. The reason that they did not come with us was because my mother had to stay with my sisters who were studying pharmacology there.…

My family’s unfortunate situation left me feeling out of control of my future, but hard work was something I could control. I meticulously planned my every step, prioritizing each stride in pursuit of medical school. In one short year, I have managed to complete all my academic prerequisites and perform especially well in my biology, biochemistry and physics courses. I have enhanced my clinical experience through shadowing and my involvement in an exercise physiology lab where I was able to help participants better their health and lifestyles. Regardless of the costs, including giving up my summer break to complete my biology requirements, dedicating every day of my winter break to preparations for the MCAT, spending the early mornings monitoring heart rates of participants in the lab and always spending that extra night of studying, refusing to leave anything to chance, I was dedicated to my goal. I used to believe being hard working was a sign of weakness, but now I believe it is my greatest…

As a college student at Bishop State Community College, I have a long story before getting to U S A. I migrated here from Tanzania with my parents six years ago hoping for better life opportunities. I am related to Eveline when “She had consented to go away, to leave her home” (Joyce). During my time in the native country, I was fortunate to attend primary school at the expense of my parent’s low income. When we arrived in Mobile; I attended Denton middle school, hoping if one day I would be able to make my dream come true. Moreover, I finished middle school and I was able to move into high school in mobile where I had a chance to choose which college I would like to attend.…

I acknowledge, I had a really hard time last semester, and my grades suffered as a result. I don't want to make excuses for my horrible college performance, but I want to explain the circumstances. I knew that working four different jobs would hinder me from doing well in school in my previous semesters. They required a lot of me, but I needed to earn enough money to pay for my tuition at school as I do not qualify for financial aid as a non-citizen student. I thought I would be able to handle the amount of work load and I still think I could have, but I managed my time poorly. Living in America for a long period of time before I was a teenager with no work permit or permission to travel back home (prior to the deferred action law that was passed recently which allows me to now work) took a toll on my mind. After multiple evictions and not being able to afford tuition or feeling like I would amount to…

At a young age, my parents pushed me to strive for good grades to be accepted into college; I rolled with it, not questioning why. Now, I realize they didn't want me to be in the situation they grew up in; they worked in poorly-paid, laborious jobs. They’ve sacrificed so much to ensure their first son would be successful. I cannot thank them enough, all I wish to do is grant them an easy life when they can no longer…

As an undergraduate student at the University of New Mexico I have become increasingly aware of the complex network problems that I face as a citizen of the world. I have also realized the progress and success that I enjoy in the same capacity as the frontiers of medicine, technology and communication continue to expand. My desire to participate in the resolution of those problems and in the further expansion of those frontiers had inspired me to seek a degree in biology and entrance into a School of Dentistry. I intend to successfully complete program of dentistry and further my specialization in the area of endodontics. Upon completion of my degree programs I would like to return to the southwest region of the country to make my services available to the underserved population of the area. I would also like to spend some time serving the populations of Central and South America where I could gain invaluable experience and provide the much needed services of a specialist.…

It was April 2010 at Florida State University’s Ruby Diamond Concert Hall. The room was silent except for the honorable sound of the American Anthem announcing it was the beginning of our graduation ceremony. Closing my eyes, I could feel the proud vibes from every single person in the auditorium. Some were sobbing, and others hummed along to the song. I took a deep breath and felt I had finally lead my life into the right direction. I was so proud of it, including going into boot camp in just two weeks. I almost choked when I realized I had not told my mother of such decision I made weeks earlier. Just the thought of it made me forget I was celebrating such an important moment in my life. But, as the fear struck me, everyone started applauding with excitement and all the chit-chat started. Hours later, as the ceremony concluded, we walked outside to celebrate our achievement with our families. My mother had the biggest smile I have ever seen on her face in years. She rushed to where I was and hugged me very tight, as she handed me a beautiful single green rose, as she always compared to me, because I was to her a beautiful, brave only child. She told me how this moment reminded her what she felt at her graduation back in 1991, when she became a microbiologist technician. It was her proudest moment; even though my mother and father both graduated with Associates Degree in medicine I was the first one in the family to achieve a Master Degree in medicine. I guess the passion for medicine runs in our blood. She invited me to go celebrate the special occasion at our favorite restaurant. Later that evening, as we were enjoying a delicious Japanese dinner, I realized it was maybe not the right time, but the moment came and I needed to tell my mother I would be leaving soon. But, who was I fooling? I knew there was ever going to be a right time to deliver this news. Suddenly, I had a memory of nine years earlier. A tall man, with a lugubrious expression…

At the age of 6, permanent teeth begin to appear within a child’s smile. Around 12 years-old, these teeth become predominantly permanent, with an average of 32 teeth in total (FDI World Dental Federation, 2015). Education surrounding dental health is imperative before, after and throughout these stages of dentition development to ensure good oral habits and prevent dental disease. However, inequalities surrounding access to oral hygiene education is prevalent throughout countries impacted by poverty and marginalization. This includes the country of Guatemala, where 75 percent of the indigenous population lives in poverty, and children experience significantly high rates of dental caries and periodontal disease as a result of these socio-behavioural…
