Explain in details of how would you develop strategies to ensure team members have input into planning, decision making and operational aspects of work team.

In order to increase the participation of their team members, managers need to focus on developing new strategies of working with people. They need to create structural flexibility which will enable employees to be more productive and participate within the team. In order to solve problems, to respond effectively to change, and, more importantly to pre-empt change, managers, need employee commitment to both short and long-term organizational objectives. Managers must, therefore, be prepared to invest in their personnel, and, to take some risks at both the personal and organizational levels. Team systems increase flexibility; open channels for improvement and, when properly used, managed and supported can lead to higher functioning of the team. Employees can be a great sources of ideas but, to take advantage of their knowledge and Skills, you must first get them to participate. People have different levels of desire and willingness to be participative.
Some of the strategies I would use are;

• Brainstorming to involve all team members.
• Tiered communication, such as, Team meetings, email, Teleconferences and One on One meetings.
• Conflict resolution within the team.
• Appropriate training for team members.
• Reward based incentives such as a greater role within the team.
• Exercises to ensure all team members are participating.
• Open communication within the team showing members that their input is valued.
Problem solving within the team to work through any issues.
• Mentoring, taking time to interact with team members and guide them in the right direction while also accepting their input.

    The company is struggling with consistency of performance among its teams, not all managers are demonstrating the capability of leading and creating self-sufficient teams. “Too many managers assume that if we just put people together on a team, they will know how to function effectively” (Dyer JR, Dyer, & Dyer, 2013). Organizations and its leaders must understand the critical role that they play in the effectiveness of a team. Team members must be trained to be cohesive and contributing members. It is why managers play an enormous role in the efficiency of a team. They guide the daily operations and overall organizational atmosphere. Managers can create poor performing teams or high performing teams, create a path for success, and produce…

    High performing teams have a clear sense of their purpose. Why? Because the team leader makes it clear, shares with them the organisational vision and how the team vision relates to this. This should be revisited at least once a year, ideally every six months as so many changes will have occurred. And if you are a member of a team where the leader is not doing this – ask for it. Ask for a planning day or morning where you can go through the team vision and goals so everyone can be aligned to it.…

    Syer & Connolly (1996) describes a “team system” as a group of people who constitute a system of interrelated entities and whose members share a common goal. They argue that team members need to develop awareness of themselves and each other, and of their differences, through giving descriptive feedback. This allows appreciation of differences, good contact and improved communication. Trust, respect, team spirit and synergy may then emerge. Consequently this leads to a highly developed awareness. The notion of a cycle more easily suggests the kind of continuous process that teams go through and need to revisit as new members are introduced or members leave. This model suggest that skill and attention are required from the manager and team members. A key role of the manager is to enable team members to work together on their tasks. This involves thinking about the history of the team as well as the individual and also requires the manager to promote their ability to work together as group. The following shows the cycle of developing team working skills based on Syer & Connolly 1996.…
