Experiment One:
A researcher wanted to test the effect of caffeine on sleep. Fifty students volunteered to participate in the study and signed up for one of two nights. Thirty-three students participated on Tuesday night. They each were given two cups of regular coffee to drink one hour before going to sleep. Seventeen students participated on Wednesday night. They each were given two cups of decaffeinated coffee to drink one hour before going to sleep. Each student was monitored with an EEG (a test that looks at brain function) to record exactly when they fell asleep. Students in the caffeine group took significantly longer to fall asleep. The researcher concluded that caffeine interferes with the ability to fall asleep.

Experiment Two:
A researcher wanted to determine if a new anti-anxiety drug decreased anxiety levels. Three hundred patients were given the new drug and three hundred patients were given a placebo (also known as a “sugar pill” that does not contain any medicine). All of the patients were told they were receiving the new drug and were monitored for six months. At the end of the six months, all of the patient information was analyzed and the researcher concluded that because the patients given the placebo indicated the same reduction in anxiety as the patients given the new drug, the new drug was ineffective in decreasing anxiety levels.

In this lab the main purpose was to research for a company that made bargain brand products to see if college students equally like bargain bands to name brands. The experiment that was preformed was based solely on the taste of the products. To be sure the only thing that affect the experiment was taste, the experiment was made a single blind experiment, which is simply the administer knows which product is which but the test subject does not. To start off the experiment the sample of college students was at a number of 18. The first step taken was to randomly assign the brand labels which would be either j or k. In this experiment j became bargain brand and k became name brand. The experiment started off with the administer wearing gloves and ask the test subject to close their eyes so slimily seeing it would not help determine which product is which. Then the test subject was asked to draw a number from a box and if it had a zero the administer would give brand j then k but if it was a one they would give brand k the j. Then the experiment move to actually tasting the product which would be a drink, and they would take product in the order that the test subject drew. After that step was done the test subject would give the cup back to the administer so they could document the results and so that no one was influenced by others option’s out loud. This result was documented for all 18 people and put into a chart to keep record of hat the test subject thought. Then the experiment ended with asking the test subject to open there eyes. These participants then had to document their own sleep regimen for the duration of two days. The researcher then concluded that there was a decrease in both vigilance, and in the participants orienting and executive control. The researchers of this experimental study did use an adequate sample, however, in terms of this study, the duration of the experiment was not long enough. To acquire a substantial conclusion to their hypothesis, they should have prolonged the experiment for over the course of seven consecutive days instead of two consecutive days. However the methods from the researchers for their experimental study did provide a relevant supply of information for someone else to replicate their study.
