A chemist is a scientist who studies the composition and properties of substances. The discipline a chemist practices, chemistry, originates from several earlier practices, stemming from ancient times. Chemists commonly have a heavy involvement in research, in order to build on the body of knowledge, by testing and uncovering properties and uses of substances. The expertise of a chemist is called upon within various important interdisciplinary efforts, including medicine, pharmacology, engineering, and earth sciences. Educational requirements for chemistry careers include a Bachelor of Science degree or degree of higher standing.
