In The Fault In Our Stars the phrase “without pain, how could we know joy?” represents a big part of the book’s meaning toward the reader because Hazel is always in pain, that pain led her to meet Augustus, meeting Augustus gave her joy. Furthermore, in the book it references to this specific quote, one way is when Augustus went to buy cigarettes by himself, he felt great pain because his cancer was really bad, but he was doing what made him happy, which was being independent. “Without pain, how could we know joy”. Many references to this phrase are said along the book. This phrase is not only in this book. In real life many examples can be given about it. Hazel stated this because I think she was trying to show the difference between pain and joy, but at the same time how they are together in everything. Hazel is that phrase.

In Isaac’s case he was not in pain physical, but emotionally, because his girlfriend Monica broke up with him. That led Isaac to find joy in egging her house and car. In Amsterdam Hazel decides to go to the Anne Frank house, although she knew there were many stairs that could complicate her journey inside because of her cancer and difficulty breathing. Being able to conquer all those sets of stairs made hazel happy, or proud of herself because she DID IT… she did not back down and fail.
