Examples Of Spoken Language
The second example of spoken language is Obama's contribution to the interview by talk show host Jay leno. I will analyse this piece of spoken language which has been pre-recorded to be broadcasted in America making a huge audience of listeners for Obama to promote himself as president as well as convey his opinions on the closures of the embassies in the Middle east. The tone of the interview is very informal even when discussing difficult, serious topics. The atmosphere remains friendly and calm and the interview appears spontaneous but would likely have been pre-recorded.
Jay Leno introduces Obama on the talk show by using his full status term of President and then following this by using his full name in the quote " Welcome the president of the United States- Barack Obama. Welcome back sir" which shows Obama 's political status and identifies him as being a very important political figure. After Jay Leno personalises the interview by using his full name. Jay Leno also introduces Obama as "sir" which again suggests that Jay Leno is respecting Obama's title as president by using formal terms conveying a respect for him that the audience will also feel.

Obama repeats " Its good to be back" showing his enthusiasm to be on the show in a natural way the audience therefore thinks the interview is spontaneous. The audience are then more inclined to like Obama as he uses this sentence "Thank you very much, thank you" which is directed at the audience and Jay Leno and is a way to flatter them. Obama also uses repetition in the quote " Thank you very much, thank you" which creates a relaxed, friendly atmosphere with the positive bond he creates between the audience and

By structuring his speech around ethos, logos, and pathos he is able to capture the audience on an emotion level and persuade them towards unity. Obama is also able to take a very wrangling issue, such as race and address it in such a respectable manner using the appeal of logos. By warping together all three of these appeals into his speech, Obama is able to tie together the three essential qualities that a speech must need for the audience to accept his message. Each one of these appeals is to direct the audience in a different way and in his speech he has them in perfect order to control the…

In my investigation I will be studying the use of language during the live general election debates in 2010. The election was the first of its kind seen in the UK whereby all parties would take part in three live TV debates across three different broadcasters, Sky News, ITV and BBC. All questions asked were not disclosed to the leaders before the debate and of course, the stakes could not be higher, with a potential prime ministerial role on the line.…

His voice is very direct and to the point when he states how he would approach the nation as a whole: “We, the citizens of America, are now joined in a great national effort to rebuild our country and to restore it's promise for all of our people”. The formal tone allowed a flow through his speech that showed his thoughts clearly and straightforwardly. The short pauses created tension and a sense of understanding between President Trump and his audience. Much of his…

While Obama speaks very formally when he is addressing the public in his Victory Speech, there is an alteration in his dialect when he is being interviewed by David Letterman. When he is speaking formally, his speech is carefully planned out and is structured perfectly, whereas on the Letterman show, although Obama has a general idea of what he is going to be talking about, there are still some surprises, so there are a lot more pauses in his speech and he uses fillers such as ‘er-’ and ‘um-’ and also repeats…

This past year, I was walking with my boyfriend in the mall and we happened to go into a jewelry store. We were just looking around and I spotted a beautiful diamond ring. He came over a looked at it and said it was pretty. Well Christmas came and I was wondering if he got it for me. I opened all my presents from him and they were all great except I didn’t get my ring. Well we went to eat and go see a movie, and when he brought me back home I went upstairs to my room and there was a little box lying on my pillow. I opened it up and it was my diamond ring I wanted. I was reaching for my phone to call him and when I turned around he was standing right there. I was so happy! I think a diamond ring is a lot like me for three reasons:…

Obama’s speech is addressed to the young people of America. He speaks directly to a bunch of young people in a high school in Arlington, Virginia and the speech is transmitted to a lot of other students in all ages. This is probably why he starts the speech with a ‘Hello everyone, how’s everybody doing today?’1 It’s a pretty laid back way of starting a speech and the goal is probably to break the ice and engage the audience by making a connection between himself and the audience. He wants the young people to identify with him and he tells them he has been where they are right now, by saying ‘ I get it. I know what that’s like.’2 By saying this, he tries to remove the distance between being the president of America and being a normal teenager.. Obama points out to the audience that even the boy, who ended up being the president, has had a strained relationship to being a student and going to school. He gets down on their level when he says ‘it’s quite understandable if you’re feeling a little nervous’3and ‘some of you are probably wishing it were still summer, and you could’ve stayed in bed just a little longer this morning. I know that feeling’4 So you can say that he addresses the audience with some kind of sympathy by saying that he understands them and the goal of this is to give the impression that Obama isn’t just a bossy president, he is actually their friend who wants the best for them and that they aren’t that different, meaning that they can do what he has done.…
