When a counselor's decision causes harm to a client then the boundary crossing becomes a boundary violation. A violation of boundaries opens the counselor to professional and legal consequences that range from the suspension of credentials to loss of credentials, possible fines, and, in the case of sexual misconduct, incarceration. In order to prevent boundary crossing from becoming a boundary violation, the professional counselor must take measures to avoid high-risk situations. One example of the most common instance of boundary crossing becoming a boundary violation is that of multiple or dual relationships.
