Evolution Of Police Dogs
Many cases and people are found by the expert nose of a canine. They play an important role in police duties and cases. K-9’s has made the police force more efficient. This gives us more deaths, bombs, and illegal drugs found. With the help of these dogs it makes the duties of a police officer and community a lot easier.
K-9 dogs also known as police dogs have evolved and changed over time. These dogs were used all the way back from modern time. Romans used dogs for mainly hunting and security. The Spanish also used them to assist in the war for finding mines, be on patrol, and even an a messenger.. About 1,500 dogs were being used in the Korean and Vietnam war. Yes all dogs are used for the police force but some are used for certain duties. One dog would be a Patrol dog and these dogs are used to protect their handler. When any aggressive move is made toward the officer the dog senses it and will attack. This type of dog can track a person. These dogs can smell a scent up to 8 hours old and perfume can not fool the nose of a hound. Another dog that is not quite similar to patrol dogs are Narcotic dogs these dogs are not trained to attack or be aggressive at all. These dogs are required to have patience and are able to work long period at a time. The k-9s are trained to find drugs such as cocaine, marijuana, heroin and that's just to name a few they find these drugs in all areas. Not all dogs are located and found with the police force but with the fire department as well. These dogs can tell officers where the fire was started and what caused it. During these cases many samples are taken by officers but with dogs time and money are saved because the dogs can smell for chemicals that are caused by a fire that way they can tell officers how it was caused. Lastly there are explosive detection dogs. The k-9Ps are trained to find odors of explosives, ammunition and even firearms. Not only can these dogs smell on the ground but they can also search on cruise ships and air lines. For these police jobs the dogs they use are mainly German Shepherds, Labradors, Golden retrievers and mixed breeds (Brown 6).All K9s are trained to a high level of obedience. They are expected to follow both verbal and hand commands of their handler. The dogs are able to be placed in a "down stay" while the ECO handler converses with the public, yet be ready for immediate recall if
