During this roundtable discussion, it was very challenging for me to remain on one side of the debate. I think this was challenging because I remain more neutral on this topic; Meaning I understand both pros and cons of evidence-based treatment. Although, I can say this discussion encouraged me to think more about the importance of evidence-based treatment. There are many pros to using evidence-based treatment.…

Parent management training (PMT) is also known as behavioral parent training (BPT) is an evidence based intervention for families with co-occurring needs such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder, and conduct disorder. This intervention was developed in the early 1960’s, due to the increase in the need for therapies focusing on the child and parental needs. The pioneers of this intervention were several child psychologists, including Robert Wahler, Constance Hanf, Martha E. Bernal, and Gerald Patterson, they were inspired to develop new treatments based on behavioral principles of operant conditioning and applied behavioral analysis.…

One of the leading motives for expanding into Africa was money. Europe believed they could overcome their financial shortcomings by using another country’s empty space towards their benefit. The problem with this endless chase for wealth, is that we hurt other communities in the process. We see this pattern time and time again throughout history; the race to wealth will always conflict with…

I conducted an action research project to determine how Scientific Research Based Interventions (SRBI) help improve the reading skills of my English Language Learners first grade students. I used the Diagnostic Reading Assessment (DRA) to gather pre and post data. This allowed me to have a beginning reading level and to determine the level of improvement achieved by the students at the end of the study. I used benchmarks assessments to guide instruction and determine mastery of reading skills. The results of this study demonstrated that after providing intensive interventions in key reading skills, students make progress on their reading level. The intervertions were more effective when using daily for about 30 minutes and focused on the needs…

The first thought that comes to mind when thinking about Africa is often, what is going wrong there now, or it is a very dangerous place for foreigners to visit. This is a stereotype that has plagued Africa for the past hundred years and has aided to why Africa still is perceived today, especially with epidemics such as HIV/AIDs, Ebola, and refugees fleeing war torn countries. Africa is an enormous continent with over 1.26 billion people living on it spread out between 54 countries. With this in mind it is important to remember that particular crises affect only particular regions of Africa for example, northern Africa has lower HIV/AIDs rates than even the US and many other western countries, and is really a problem in southern Africa in countries…

Historically nurses’ decision making has relied on tradition, authority, trial and error and research (Lee 2003, p. 618). However, more recently the appreciation and application of evidence based practice (EBP) has caused a shift in clinical nursing decision making (Lee 2003, p. 618). EBP is defined as ‘integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research’ (Sackett et al. 1996, cited in Rolfe, Segrott & Jordan 2008, p. 448). EBP must take into account patient values and be tailored to individual patient needs (Foo et al. 2011, p. 522) and requires a commitment to lifelong learning (Johnson 2008, p. 169). This paper will explore the importance of EBP in clinical practice, outline the barriers faced by nurses’ in utilising research in their practice, describe the strategies in clinical settings to enhance the use of research in practice and the personal strategies I will employ to ensure that my future practice as a nurse will be based upon evidence and research.…

Africa is the world’s second-largest and second-most populous continent. In measure of wealth it is one of the wealthiest continents in terms as natural resources. Although Africa’s abundant amount of natural resources, it remains the world’s poorest and most underdeveloped continent. This could be a result of many things such as corruption within the government, failure in central planning, and lack of access to foreign capital. Sub-Saharan Africa is the least successful region in the world in reducing poverty. The continent is always under constant tribal and military conflict so it can not work together for a common goal much like the United States. By comparing and contrasting the control of natural resources and mineral that many African…
