The Event That Changed My Life
There are many things in this world that one can do to completely change their entire outlook on life. They could become a stronger follower of God, visit a Buddhist temple, lose a loved one, or donate to a shelter or store for the less fortunate. An event that definitely changed my life for the better was when I was at a battered women’s shelter when I was 9 years old and realized just how much of a blessing of a life I have.
I was in the third grade the year we volunteered at the shelter. My mom Katherin had recently wed my step dad Wes. Also they had just had a little baby girl, my half sister Ella. This had been a busy year for my family because we were also new to the state of Georgia. We had just moved from Arkansas. My mom had been looking at places for the family to volunteer at for the holidays because we had never done anything like that before. My mom had found a battered womens shelter in Atlanta and signed us up to serve Thanksgiving.
We were all excited about doing thanksgiving in a new place. I was a little skeptical at first then my mom told me that there would be kids for me to play with there so I was a lot more excited. Once we got there on Thanksgiving Day It was great, the women and their children were so happy that we were there. At first I didn’t really understand why they were so happy, I mean for all I knew they did this every year, but now I have come to realize that for those women and children it was a huge deal because most people don’t do nice things for less fortunate people all the time. My mom had been right about all the kids that would be there. The kids were all really nice and fun! A lot of the kids clothes looked either to small or really dirty but I had expected it because my mom told me that these people didn’t have very much money to buy new clothes or toys. There was one little girl in particular that was the reason I had

Going to feed my Starving Children was a great experience for me. From the name of it I thought that we would be putting nonperishable items into a box for families. When I got to the building and seeing what was there I was very surprised to see what it was actually. When I was there with my classmates I think we had a good time putting the dry ingredients into a plastic bag that was sealed up and put into a box to be shipped somewhere. Not knowing where it was going was a question I had in my head as I stood there packing it up. I have always heard my parents tell me that I am wasting food and that there are children out there without food. I never really took it to heart until the moment of…

A big event that has changed my life was when my older brother moved away to go to the navy. This changed my life cause I did not know if I was ever going to see him again. When he told me he was leaving and not going to be back for awhile i thought he was leaving because of me, I was a little brat back then so yeah and at the age i was i thought everything was my fault. The day my brother left was probably the saddest thing to ever happen because me and him would always hang out and play video games or walk around town or do something fun. I remember when we dropped him off at the airport i was clinched on to his leg and i was refusing to let go because I didn’t want him to leave. Now that i look back on it i think one of the reasons why i didn’t want him to leave is because he was kinda like my best friend/ role model so yeah and well he is my older brother and I didn’t want anything to happen to him.…

It was a crisp, Autumn Saturday evening at my grandparents farm, my entire extended family was packed around a bonfire roasting marshmallows and eating s 'mores. My mother was talking with her brother and sisters, my uncle and aunts, about the A+ Program, my mother mentioned that I had no idea on how I was going to get so many community service hours. My aunt said I could come help tutor her 5th grade class any days that I would like. That was a giant relief to hear because this situation had really been bothering me lately. I was also glad I wouldn 't have to waste 50 hours of my life picking up trash on the side of the highway. Instead, I will be helping kids with their education and growing relationships with them as well. I really enjoy working with children so this was a great opportunity.…

It was a chilly October evening. The air was crisp and cool; it was the type of air that would hit you in the face when you walked out the door. My mom had just gotten informed that she had breast cancer. It came as a shock to everyone in the family, seeing as no one in her family had been diagnosed before her. That day was the first and last day she let herself think negatively. From that moment forward she decided to take matters into her own hands.…

They were ecstatic. It one of the many times they almost brought tears to my eyes. A day before the trip something made me ask the girls if they had swimming suits or shoes and they both said no. I had to get with my supervisor once again and figure out how we were going to get what they needed. Then she said " You know the girls don't have a ride to the Armory" which was the trip drop off area. So, we had two problems to solve. We were up for any challenge at this point in time. I went to Wal-Mart to get the girls some swim shoes and accessories while my supervisor went to Target to get the bathing suits. Later that night we called Mrs. Carol and asked if she could pick up the two girls before she did her regular bus routes, and of course she said yes because she enjoyed the sisters just as well as we did. I thought everything was done, and there was nothing else to do, but of course I was wrong. I forgot the girls had to have spending money. Then I asked my mother to ask all of my aunts if they would help my cause with small donations. I got $30.00. At first I thought they could just split that, but I wanted to have a carefree day. The morning of the trip arrived and the kids were on time and just as happy as anyone I've ever seen. The older sister approached me and said " Thank you Coach D" and that was when I decided to reach in my pocket and give her $60.00 to split with…

My mom going on the trip calmed some of these nerves, but that didn’t change the fact that I was traveling 6 hours away to do service work with strangers for a week. I got to the camp, and the whole atmosphere put everyone in a joyful and loving mood. After all, we were at a Catholic camp, and the whole purpose was to be there to cheerfully serve the less fortunate, so the staff tried to make the best out of it as they could. I knew right at that first night that I was going to enjoy the week, but that is an understatement. I enjoyed it so much that I have been going on these trips every summer since then, to make 5 total trips to different cities around the United States doing unique service projects. The feeling of helping others in such a selfless way constantly rekindles a spark in myself when my own light goes out. Going on these trips always gives me such a rare feeling, that will last in me for months after I’m home from the trip, and as soon as I start to lose that feeling, it’s time for next summer’s trip already. The decision to go back every year is always a…

We woke up that morning to breakfast that was prepared by her mother Mrs. Gross. We didn’t necessarily have anything planned for the day, just to play games and watch TV. Kennedi and her family were far more fortunate than my family was. Not saying that my family was poor, but Kennedi had everything as a child, the newest phone, or latest shoes that were out, all the way to having a flat screen TV. She lived in Desoto, Texas which isn’t a bad place to live, and has nice homes. However, we spent the first half of the day inside looking and movies and playing simple board games. It was too the point where we got so bored, we went outside looking for other kids to play with.…

Watching the younger kids was the hardest. They were so young and full of life, but they were stuck in a hospital room attached to IV’s and other monitors. For a little while it gave you a kind of hopeless feeling, because they were sick and there was nothing you could do to make them feel better. This is why the other teen volunteers and I were there for though. We played with the kids and made them smile and just listened if they wanted someone to talk to. One of my absolute favorite moments while volunteering was when you first walked into a room and saw a patient that you knew from last time they were in the hospital. The kids would get the biggest smile on their faces and want to tell you all about what they had been doing since the last time you saw them. The time spent at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital was definitely life changing. It let me bless kids in need, and also allowed the kids I was around to affect the way I think. It taught me to consider what struggles people may be going through instead of immediately judging or labeling them. Being a part of this program caused me to not only value my health and life, but also taught me that everyone has struggles in their life that can be…
