Eulogy For Emily
Emily has everything she could want in life, but the freedom to date men she found worthy. She wanted to feel the one thing she has never felt; love in someone she cares for. Emily is a prime example of what can happen when you shelter your kids’ their whole lives. Coming from a wealthy family, the townspeople held them to a higher standard. Many men are interested in dating Emily, but,“none of the young men were good enough for Miss Emily and such”(Faulkner 130). The Griersons were held above the common townspeople they were tax exempt after the death of Emily’s father (Faulkner 129). Her father did not like any of the suitors that came after Emily and had no say in who she could date.
The death of her father was in a way her last connection with another family member. She did not want to accept that he was gone (Faulkner 131) and was in denial for several days until they buried him. People close in her life, leaving her alone and the reality was too much for her to take. She resorts to keeping them alive in her mind to help her cope with her dull and lonely life. Shortly after the death of her father, she meets Homer Barron, a common worker in town.
