Symbolism In A Rose For Emily
In William Faulkner “A Rose for Emily’’ we think about who is Emily, what does the rose symbolizes, and most of all who is the narrator. Throughout most of Faulkner’s story for me as a reader I wanted to figure that out. In the beginning Emily is presented as a woman who grew up wealthy never having to worry about anything. But over time things changed after her father’s death. Later on, Emily never really takes notice of the present. She never really got over being under her father’s wing. Emily became a woman known throughout town as a mysterious and secretive old woman, who’s later is pity on by the town and others around her. He could be the narrator because he’s the only one who really knew Emily. Many people began to wonder why Emily started to look sick and question why she order poison. But as soon as she is never seen again many people began to suspect tobe could be the reason.
This later gives the affect that Tobe could be the narrator. To me he was the only character throughout the story who knew a lot about Emily. He knew about her flaws, her life, and most of all about her intentions with Homer. Tobe became the type of character that Faulkner kept secret throughout the story. These factors could draws many to the conclusion that Tobe is the speaker.
Although this could be true Tobe isn’t the narrator. Tobe could just be the symbol of multiply narrators. In the works of William Faulkner’s writing, he uses different types of tones and meanings to emphasize who the narrator is.
