I use my reasoning skills (rationality) to determine what duties are as well as the universal rules that each person should follow (autonomy). By prioritizing the value of autonomy over equality my primary concern is prospecting individual rights. I believe this is always the best way to assure that everyone in the community is treated equally. Believing all person should follow the same set of universal rules so strongly that I resist making exceptions even when intuition suggests a more passionate result. I found this result to be very true of myself. My personal ethical lens may direct my academic behavior into the positives. If all is true as the ethical lens states then when I set my mind to a project,

The ethical perspectives that influenced my decision making was Being Attentive: Collect the facts and notice what's being said. Being Intelligent: Find the underlying issue and determine who's really involved. Being Reasonable: Use the lenses to consider what is good, what is true, what is fair, and what is virtuous. Being Responsible: Make an ethical choice based on your analysis. Being Reflective: Defend your choice with careful thought and observe the aftermath closely. The way these ethical perspectives influenced my decisions was through personal and community values. The Ethical Lens Inventory supports Equality and Sensibility as my core values. The results describes that I “prioritize the value of equality over autonomy” (ELI inventory). In addition, it indicates the well being of the community as my primary concern as the “best way to assure that individuals are treated fairly” (ELI inventory). The explanations of these core values reassure my conviction that one-size-fits all approach isn’t the best way to find solutions, but rather the best results are achieved by examining each situation in its context. In other words, I prioritize the value of sensibility over rationality.…

The ethical lens inventory exercise is very useful and something that I have lost sight of over the years. I was first introduced to this concept when I first applied for a sales position over a decade ago. After completing the exercise, the results of my answers places me in the Rights and Responsibility Lens. Since no one is perfect, having blind spots is inevitable, my blind spot as a result of my answers states that "belief that motive justifies method." My strengths are reason and self knowledge, whereas my weakness is becoming judgmental and legalistic.…

Anne Lamott said, “Good literature substitutes for an experience which we have not ourselves lived through.” Good literature allows individuals to live through events which they have not encountered in their lives. I agree with this quote because I believe it is true. This quote is shown to be true through the books, Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. In both pieces of literature, characters had an experience which we haven’t had or been through. Books help us understand the situations that we haven’t faced yet.…

J.F. Clarke once said, “The bravest of individuals is the one who obeys his or her conscience.” I think that what Clarke meant is that people who listen to their heart, people who do what they know or believe to be right, even if everyone else is or would be against them for it, are the bravest people of all. I agree with this quote because it’s usually hard to do the right thing, especially if one has no support. Two books that show this are Arthur Miller’s The Crucible and Lightning by Dean Koontz.…

The principles and values that administrate my day-to-day relations with people of all social, financial and ethnic levels forms the basis of who I am professionally and personally.
