Wilson, Hantz, and Hanna (1992) explain the guidelines for ethical interpersonal communication like so. Respect of a person and their ideas suggests that lying and distortion of information are not generally ethical behaviours. Respect for a person’s ideas suggests that we should communicate in ways such that the other person feels free and comfortable to disagree with us. If the other person feels someone has a higher status or power, they may feel threatened and, therefore, not comfortable in disagreeing with us.
